February 2, 2021 at 16:40 #1520970Seeing the BBC coverage brought a tear to my eye but at the same time couldn’t help smiling.
RIP Sir Tom.
Value Is EverythingFebruary 2, 2021 at 17:04 #1520977A very sad announcement. I read this morning that a lot of his family were with him, and that made me think and wonder, if he might be struggling.
I do think someone slipped up here. If he had been in my family I would have put him in a glass cage. Symptoms usually start after five days. Someone will not be sleeping well tonight.
A totally charming man – and to me, when he spoke you could not help but hang onto his words…They were that special.
The real hero and icon in this pandemic to boot Sars covid 19 into touch and give people the confidence to think they would eventually put it to bed.Sadly he did not leave the pitch.
February 2, 2021 at 17:16 #1520979I think Tom’s last thoughts would have been…
” Look what I, as a very old man, was given the opportunity to do “
February 2, 2021 at 17:28 #1520980A delightful gent
Pneumonia: ‘the old man’s friend’ . The well-drilled routine of comforting palliation in hospital and a gentle slipping away
Way to go
RIP

February 3, 2021 at 13:01 #1521087I know he,s had pneumonia but he would have been the perfect person to give the first jab to in Dec
Shame he was in Barbados
February 3, 2021 at 13:04 #1521089A sad day such an unselfish gentleman.
Brought the nation together when things looked much worse than today.
Condolences to family & friends.February 3, 2021 at 13:05 #1521090I read this morning that a lot of his family were with him
Is that correct? I believed you could not visit family in hospital even if the patient was on death’s door. I’ve heard stories of people watching loved ones die on Zoom etc.
RIP Captain Tom. You certainly gave a lot of people hope
February 3, 2021 at 22:38 #1521184Captain Sir Tom Moore’s family have revealed he only tested positive for coronavirus after his ten-day stay in hospital being treated for pneumonia. He contracted the virus on Jan 12 – so it was the hospital stay in Bedford.
He did so much for the NHS raising so much money. Everyone is paying tribute tonight and so am I, but I’m just wondering – if he did so much for the NHS to help with the virus it seems the NHS owed him a special duty of care – he did not receive it.
February 3, 2021 at 23:28 #1521198The daily mail clarified this for me. He tested negative as he went into Bedford hospital on Jan 12th. He tested positive on his release on Jan 22nd. So he contracted the virus during his ten day hospital stay.
February 3, 2021 at 23:37 #1521202Anyway, the fact is you have left us. Thank you Captain Tom for what you did for the NHS. You also cheered a lot of people up – in fact a whole nation.
February 4, 2021 at 13:27 #1521240I thought it of interest to examine the facts of the heroe’s death.
Barbados trip (26 DAYS)
Low infection area
Trip paid for by Brtish Airways
4 family members plus the hero.
Dec 9 – Jan 12 (26 days) allowed as before area put in Tier 3Family statement said
” He was tested regularly for the virus between Dec 9tb and Jan 12 ”This tends to suggest he was tested in Barbados which seems unlikely.
Tom Moore was photographed on the plane out 11th Dec – he raised a half smile. In the family photo of Dec 18 he was not smiling. I draw no conclusions from this, and in written words he said he was on a holiday of a lifetime which was the fact if the matter. He was enjoying the sun and was able to dress in shorts.
On Jan 22 he tested positive for the virus and was found to be suffering from pneumonia.
Hanna his daughter tweeted that he was admitted to hospital on that day Sun 31 with breathing problems and had received a positive covid test the week before.
Covid symptoms usually occur 5/6 days after transmission but can take two weeks or so.
It is therefore possible he caught it on the plane on the way back having tested positive 16 days after.
As for the risk of catching a virus on a plane this is low risk – air conditioning with hepa filters and renewed air from outside regularly replacing stale air. There is an increased risk if the engines are switched off and air conditioning also. In the photo Tom was not wearing a mask – but presumably he was during the trip.
Piers Morgan stated Tom was in hospital battling the virus.
Enough for today. I did watch the Tribute to him on TV and very clear he spread so much happiness. Michael Ball set the tone extremely well I thought.
February 4, 2021 at 15:07 #1521255In the detective’s private notebook.
‘If I had a frail elderly relative who was offered a free holiday in Barbados or maybe the Virgin Islands 500 bird miles distant (to possibly spot Piers quaffing rum in his bathing pants) – and the frail one could take me with him on a freebie.
Like Christopher Robin I would have to say some serious prayers in earnest, before I made that call.
Now would I ask if he had consulted his quack ??? ‘
Piers Morgan was critisized for his Xmas trip to the Virgin Islands – as unessential travel. Trolls as they were described, criticized Tom’s family for the tropical beach trip with Tom, although it did not breach restrictions. The family came under pressure. What do people often do when they are under pressure? They set the future scene to try to avoid its recurrence.
Piers Morgan said that Captain Tom was battling the virus and one would think he might know, so interesting words, although inconclusive.
P.s 250,000 inhabitants – best time to visit Sept Oct. before the Xmas crowds arrive. It seems the Captain visited at a busy time. I hope he may have seen some flying fish and the local cuisine.
February 4, 2021 at 15:25 #1521261Just thought I’d include a little light relief…..A few words from the short-lived Winkleman – there is just the smallest chance Captain Tom might be reading…
” I’ve tried changing my style of writing over time but old habits die hard. I hope it doesn’t cause offence to your literary eyes. By the way, I remember many childhood visits to Morecambe; Dad worked on the railway so every Sunday he’d use his free travel concession passes. My long lasting memory is of Heysham Head and watching Pinky and Perky in their infancy. Did you know they started up as an outside entertainment duo a bit like Punch and Judy? Now there’s a couple to be reckoned with, don’t you think ?”
🐢…good ol’ bucket ‘n’ spade holiday – there’s nothing quite like it, but the tides of Morecambe are way too fast for the likes if me !

February 4, 2021 at 18:55 #1521307A nice picture and looks to be taken on a first floor balcony ( possibly ground ) of Tom’s holiday residence or room I would guess. Russ Abbot was a pretty convincing Fagin and drummer – Cliff Richard wears jeans. Tom doesn’t seem to smile much in photos and I would think he’s pretty fed up of them so I read nothing into that. Everyone must wear a mask on the Island in public places where people gather – even children. Social distancing is one metre.
Statement from Bedford Hospital in agreement with Captain Sir Tom Moore’s daughters, Hannah Ingram-Moore and Lucy Teixeira:
1st Feb..‘Bedford Hospital continues to care for Captain Sir Tom Moore. At this time members of Captain Tom’s family are with him. We respectfully request that media give the family space and privacy and do not contact them directly so they can focus on their father, grand-father and father-in-law.’
