The horse I really wanted to see entered, hasn’t made it, so starting from scratch here.
No absolute standout at the moment, but I’d be interested to see how Pythagoras fares at York on Thursday, while for all he’s very high in the weights, Father of Jazz would be my early #1. Think there’s a fair bit of potential there.
Poet of Life looks as if he could be ideal for this, and he’s pushing Fsther of Jazz for my early #1, while Variyann, who caught the eye last time, completes the early shortlist.
As well as that quartet, I might as well mention Ropey Guest just now, as he’ll no doubt draw me in on the day.
Last but not least, Good Birthday worth a mention for this race definitely, and I’d say he’s got a better chance than his current 33’s
Early shortlist….
Father of Jazz 20’s
Pythagoras 50’s
Poet of Life 20’s
Variyann 20’sAugust 21, 2021 at 11:15 #1557688This one of those races where I just have to have an ap bet.
I bet Al Rufaa last year, and he didn’t run well at all, so he’s hard to recommend, but I do remember thinking that he could be very good.
I know that if he does run here again that I would bet him again, so I’ve bet him early at 40-1 ew.
August 28, 2021 at 13:39 #1558380I’m pleased to see Al Rufaa getting a run under his belt today at Goodwood. I wouldn’t be overly concerned if he finishes down the field today either. I’ve bet him today, and I’ve had another bet at 40-1 ew as well for this
August 28, 2021 at 15:18 #1558397Not a bad run that Jeff, Rob Havlin would of been proud of that ride from Frankie.
September 6, 2021 at 16:11 #1559308Walhaan EW @ 66/1
Keep forgetting to look at the bookies not on oddschecker. Just had a look around and he is this price with a couple of firms.
Looks like he has a bit to do at the moment to get in, but looking at the last couple of years the full field was less than the maximum so got to be a chance.
Never heard of him before but watched that race last week where he an 2nd to the FAV for this and you could half fancy him to beat that one next time on 4 lb better terms.Looked like he was given a fair bit to do but was finishing really well at the end.
September 13, 2021 at 07:57 #1560364Jeff….re Al Rufaa….what did you make of last Friday’s run at Sandown with regard to the Cambs? I’m in two minds – they’re either going to keep him to 7f races or they’re sharpening him up for a shot at Newmarket. I’m leaning towards the former while feeling he’d do better over a longer distance. But as I often ask myself ‘what do I know?’
September 13, 2021 at 18:20 #1560410I think and I hope you’ve called it right John. I thought that was a much better run last time, and it gave me a lot more hope. I can’t get last years flop out of my head, but I’d like him to have another try so i at least know.
September 13, 2021 at 18:51 #1560416I have got my eye on one, but haven’t backed it yet and would rather wait until I have done before discussing it.
One I have backed already, though, is Uncle Bryn, who might just make a mockery of the whole Handicap.

Can’t remember the last time I didn’t have an Antepost bet in this, but made sense this year, as no standout.
Poet of Life and Variyann still in there from original shortlist, with slight preference for the latter. I’ll probably have him, but wouldn’t be a massively confident selection.
At a big price I might consider Baryshnikov, but definitely a wait and see job.
September 23, 2021 at 11:38 #1561256I’m disappointed that Al Rufaa doesn’t run, but the market vibes were not good in the lead up this week, so it’s not a massive surprise.
I’ll wait and see what the prices are, but I’ll go with Indeed win, and Good Birthday ew

Agree VTC. This is my favourite Flat handicap of the season. I would usually have a strong view by now but I am struggling this year.
Uncle Bryn is way too short. I expect he will be a bigger price on Saturday morning but I doubt you will get more than 5/1. The bookies are still running scared after Lord North hacked up.
Royal Marine has some back class and might be of interest.
Irish Admiral won well at Redcar but his sights were lowered that day and I just wonder if he will find one or two too good again.
I will wait until Saturday morning when I expect a few firms will be offering seven places.

Ditto….and ditto. Soon as I saw he was entered in a 7f race at Ascot (2 October) my warning bell sounded, and the entry (not taken up) for Saturday at Haydock was the final nail. He’s in the Balmoral but my hunch is they’d prefer 7f and good ground or better.
September 23, 2021 at 13:45 #1561269Uncle Bryn won’t even go off favourite now Dettori’s on the other Gosden runner. I was surprised when I was looking through the race he was so short. A Gosden trained 3 year old yes and very unexposed in handicaps but he was very very disappointing prior to his gelding op and if you thought he was the second coming you’d be hanging your hat on the operation fixing him. My take on it was he won a weakish race at Ascot (granted the 5th has won since but he’s an unreliable sort as far as winning goes) and they went a crawl and he had the run of things. I’m not saying he wouldn’t have won anyway if things had been different but whichever way you look at it he’s picked up a 4lb penalty for winning a race that he didn’t need to win in order to make the cut and he’s 2lbs wrong with the handicapper as a result.
September 23, 2021 at 17:23 #1561287I spent this afternoon ploughing thorugh this race compling my ratings and have to say this is one of the most uninspring renewals that I can remember. Used to be a time when if you could find something that was largely progressive and won over the distance you had the key, but there’s precious little of that nature this year. Uncle Bryn hints at progression, but my figures suggest the form lacks depth.
133 Bell Rock
119 Dance Jupiter
117 Majestic Dawn
117 Fastnet Crown
115 Spirit Dancer
115 Good Birthday
114 Fantastic Fox
114 You’re HiredBell Rock comes out miles clear, his overall figure coming a race he was beaten miels in and latest form is from small fields. Dance Jupiter is another whose form is from small field races.
Majestic Dawn 16/1 each-way 1/5 8 places has more weight than last year, but has been running well and has been lightly raced this season which suggests he’s been targetted once again.
Fastnet Crown 40/1 each-way 1/5 7 places hasn’t won over the distance, but has been staying on over a mile. Has decent form in big fields and is right in there on his form behind Bopedro. Good form at the Curragh which has wide expanses like Newmarket. Not had too much racing and there may be a bit more in the tank. Given his overall profile I can’t see why he’s such a long price, but we will see!
Rest of the close rated are much of a muchness, having their chance on the figures but not standing out.
September 23, 2021 at 18:10 #1561291Was looking for one with a high or highish draw.
Plumped for Anmaat 11-1 bog ew 7 places. Looked on the improve last time and is 2lb well in.
September 23, 2021 at 18:50 #1561295Spirit dancer e.w for me
September 24, 2021 at 00:22 #1561318With you on Bell Rock rob and throwing Marie’s Diamond into the mix
Know he has to step up and has it all to do but he could make all. Both currently 33/1 so nice couple of each way bets.Best of luck sorting this one out.
