Racing never ceases to produce surprises, but I can’t help wondering what on earth has persuaded Aidan O’Brien to send a once raced 2yo called Cambridge, to run at Salisbury on Thursday, in a 1M novice stakes with £10k total prize money.
Perhaps he’s got an I-Spy book of British Racecourses and wants to tick off Salisbury!
September 5, 2023 at 13:36 #1661947That view from the top of Salisbury’s Tatts stand is always worth going a long way to see, Alan.
Value Is EverythingSeptember 5, 2023 at 14:34 #1661949I’m surprised he hasn’t took over Henry Adams and put him in the seller

September 5, 2023 at 16:17 #1661954Maybe times are getting tough for The Lads and they desperately need that €10,000 bonus.
September 5, 2023 at 19:18 #1661965How much would it cost (including wages) for them to bring over one horse?
Or are they bringing one or two Doncaster horses at the same time?
Value Is EverythingSeptember 5, 2023 at 19:22 #1661967I’m with GT on this – Salisbury on a sunny day is worth a visit from anywhere on the planet.
And tbh the elevated view in Tatts is just as good as the one in the Members/Bibury/whatever it’s called.
As a locally-based Salisbury regular, surely you concur, Alan?

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"September 5, 2023 at 20:11 #1661973Perhaps he’s teeing him up for next year’s Sovereign Stakes.
The more I know the less I understand.

Agree 100% – watching races from the top of the Tatts stand is by far the best option at Salisbury. If you can handle the climb that is, something I now find I can only do once a day. And further evidence that it’s the ideal place for viewing is the fact that the commentary box is located in that part of the stand – one of the few I can think of that isn’t inside the Members area of a course.
September 6, 2023 at 09:01 #1661998And it’s pretty close to the commentary box that I usually stand.
The ascent by stairs to the vantage point is certainly great exercise, but it’s a stern test and only gets sterner every year and I must confess I’m off the bit with it after the first two races nowadays.
One of my very favourite racecourses – on a recent visit I walked the course and, after the loop, particularly enjoyed being down at the 5f start where it all started for Mill Reef all those years ago in May 1970.
Steve Cauthen’s first ever British ride was also a winning one there, on Marquee Universal, in 1979, and of course the track used to stage 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas trials on that card.
That’s probably not the reason why Cambridge is being sent there, but he’s certainly an eye-catching declaration.

Yep, gone are the days I could manage those stairs two at a time.
Value Is EverythingSeptember 6, 2023 at 11:59 #1662010I remember watching that race on ITV, Ginge. Gone are the days of the trials at Salisbury, sadly.
September 7, 2023 at 14:48 #1662107At least the trip was worthwhile.

September 7, 2023 at 19:49 #1662127I’ve got him for next year’s Cambrdgeshire.

September 7, 2023 at 20:24 #1662132Salisbury has one of the best clerks of the course around, Jeremy Martin. None of this overwatering nonsense, most of the COC’s appear afflicted with in this country.
September 7, 2023 at 20:41 #1662133Didn’t Henry Cecil send a lot of his prospects over to Salisbury.
The more I know the less I understand.
September 7, 2023 at 21:57 #1662138Cecil tended to use Yarmouth and Nottingham as places for good horses to gain their first racecourse experience.
Salisbury was more Dick Hern, Ian Balding, etc.
