Can you all PLEASE ask 3 or 4 jockeys how the ground was riding after the first race on all 4 days and report back to us the punters and fans of the sport who would like to know.

PaulO….any updates from the course appreciated as usual.

Will do Cav – I aim to be there by nine each morning at the latest and will get any pertinent updates on here as and when I get time. (I will have two "backup systems" with me in case the wi-fi at the course gets overloaded – usually when the photographers start uploading).

I will also attempt to get some going updates from the jocks after the first race as well – however there is a strict "pecking order" at the Festival and Channel Four and Five Live have first go at the jockeys!!!

Now that is interesting…how is that enforced in any way? That would royally piss me off…

Screw the pecking order, if you see a jocky shout "here pal, what’s the ground like" ? and he will shout "alright mate, i think it’s good to soft, with it leaning towards soft, don’t listen to these websites mate, especially Racing post, i’m suprised they don’t charge people money to find out the going".

The winning jockey in the Supreme says ‘it’s beautiful good ground’. Those that were a bit disappointing couldn’t quicken on ‘the tacky, holding ground’

The time of the Supreme will tell you all you need to know.

It is part of the accreditation conditions . basically the broadcasters have first pop and the rest of the media are not allowed into the parade ring until invited.

In a way you can see why as there have been problems with too many people in the parade ring / winners enclosure in the past.

Indeed for the four big races of the week the only access the non-broadcast media have to winning connections is the post race Press Conference.

Although as Graeme suggests half heartedly – his approach (minus the last bit) does tend to work – especially if it a jock you know.

They said the other night [sorry I’m sounding like a stuck record here] not to listen to what any jockeys or anyone says about the ground, but that they would make a point of telling everyone the time of the Supreme as quickly as possible so that everyone will know how it’s riding.

I think it does depend which jockey you ask Mo :D

But wholeheartedly agree the time of the first is a very good indication – unless, of course, the jocks do something silly and hang around at the start, although that is unlikely in the Supreme.

OK – looking at the last 7 years Supreme Nov Hdl times and the RP

    time-based ground

, here are the results (in time order):

    2005 3m 53.00secs Gd
    2002 3m 54.25secs Gd/Fm
    2006 3m 54.50secs Gd
    2004 3m 55.60secs Gd
    2007 3m 56.10secs Gd/Sft
    2003 3m 56.80secs ?
    2008 4m 06.45secs Sft

NB – there is no time-based ground for the 2003 running of the whole festival but the winning time was 3m56.80secs which is slower than the Gd/Sft ground of 2007 but is described in the RP result as "near enough perfect ground" and "this good ground"

If we assume that the 2007 (and probably 2003) ground was borderline Gd to Gd/Sft and that the 2008 ground must have been borderline Sft to Sft/Hvy (the Champion Hurdle of 2008 actually earned a RP time-based ground of Heavy), what are the cut-offs people are going to use to determine what the actual going is?

Do you use a purely linear approach, something along the lines of

    4m 05secs = Sft/Hvy
    4m 03secs = Soft
    4m 00secs = Gd/Sft
    3m 57secs = Good

The fractions seem too close together to me and don’t take the relative strengths of each winner into account.

My time/going ratios for the first race would be :

Under 3m 56s is good ground

    3m 56s to 4m 2s is good to soft

    4m 2s to 4m 10s is soft

    Over 4m 10s is heavy.

One race can’t tell you exactly what the ground is, but it does tell you what it can’t be. In other words, if the Supreme Novices time is 3m 53s, you know for certain they couldn’t go that fast on good to soft or soft.

    Cheers for that AP

Reading the Going-Stick thread in the Cheltenham Section of the Forum, it would appear that the "expected" going will be around the Gd/Sft – Sft mark.

It will be interesting to see if the times bear that out.
