Ground might have been with “soft” offiially in the title, but times suggest strongly more like “good” than good-soft imo. So can understand Candy running Limato on that score. Am guessing a bit, but the yard’s horses haven’t been in top form recently and Music Master’s dismal run in the preceding race not a good omen. If there is a virus in the yard and Limato ran with a virus – hope it does not set the horse back. Will be keeping an eye on Candy’s runners between now and Ascot. If the yard’s fortunes change then I’ll be getting involved ante-post, if not… then not sure I’ll get involved.

A double kick in the nuts to have Adaay winning it. I had money on him at 12/1 for the Coventry last season and he ran like a drain before another disappointing effort afterwards.

What really sticks in my craw is that the consistently abysmal Hanagan fell out of the stalls on Adaay 12 months ago and was never able to get on terms with Limato – that day he was 5/4f. As is so often the case with Hanagan, as soon as any expectation or pressure is lifted he manages to turn around a 5L defeat.

And to make matters worse, the next race up had a 5/4f for Haggas which predictably got turned over – I don’t know who is behind the plunges on lightly raced horses emanating from that particular yard, but they have a knack of getting royally turned over on a regular basis.

I hope Limato does bounce back at Ascot, although it will be a very hot contest indeed with Tiggy Wiggy, Ivawood and Hootenanny all likely to oppose.

Do we still pile on for Ascot Steve?

No, I wouldn’t touch him after that. Henry Candy made a faux pas running him today and his reasoning for running sounded like a load of old bollocks to me. The trainer was wittering on about having to run the horse because Haydock had done this, that and the other with the race and he felt he needed to reward that by running the horse. The original story was that the horse didn’t need another run before Ascot, it wouldn’t have brought him on any and the horse goes best when very well fresh. To turn around, and then run, on borderline going, when the stable is coming to the end of a month where they have had only one winner and a 3.45% strike rate, seems somewhat ill-judged in my opinion. If there is a virus about, who knows where the horse will now go as we move forward.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
