February 16, 2022 at 18:18 #1583512Scarborough is the Saint-Tropez of the Yorkshire Riviera, though I’d agree that Cagnes-Sur-Mer might just have the edge on Filey, Brid and Hornsea
February 16, 2022 at 20:25 #1583536Now there’s a name from the past for me Nathan. Late-August 1981. Was camping on a nearby camp site, while taking a few day’s holiday on the Riviera after a summer working in Germany as a student. Passed by the hippodrome and saw there was a trotting meet on that evening so my mates and I decided to go. Had my wallet stolen with most of my money in it. It was cucumber sandwiches all the way home to Ireland by train and ferry after that. I never went back.

February 17, 2022 at 14:01 #1583569Hornsea is a great call – but Spurn Point is the Arkle of bleak coastal locations.
If you’ve never been….don’t.

Which is the closest UK course to the sea? I’d say the winning post at Brighton is about a mile from the water so that must be a contender along with Yarmouth and Redcar (not been to either of those this century so can’t remember how close they are). Musselburgh and Ayr other possibilities (but never visited them sadly).Whatever the answer I suspect none of them can rival this menu: https://www.pavillonhippodrome.fr/menu-paddock-par-date

Roughly that
We did Brighton in the summer.
Much quicker walking from the course to the water than the other way around
must be one of the steepest, longest roads aroundGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
February 18, 2022 at 10:39 #1583622It’s not to everyone’s taste, but I still think Brighton on a sunny day is just glorious.
It’s a mixture of beautiful sea view and utter skulduggery dating back to the days of the movie “Brighton Rock.”
I always smile as the in-running drones suddenly hover into view above the notorious Whitehawk estate just before post time.
A former journalist colleague who lives there, loves Brighton as a place, but has no illusions about it, once said to me: “Brighton is a city which is helping the Police with their enquiries.”
A wonderful line.

Brightin has always been a lucky track for me. I have visited twice. On the first day a sea mist rolled in and you could hardly see a thing. The second day was glorious. The sight of the horses framed against the sky line from the 1m 4f start is one of the best in British racing.
And yes, that hill to the track is properly steep. Would not fancy walking it from the town!
February 18, 2022 at 11:50 #1583635Think it was the playwright Keith Waterhouse (Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell etc) who first made that apposite comment about Brighton: good indeed
Once spent a few days in the Old Ship Hotel on the seafront and did enjoy the seedy, shifty but effortlessly classy atmosphere of the town
Been to the races once, back in the ’80s and the impression was ‘seen better days’ though perhaps it’s been tarted up since. Splendidly situated though
I’ve braved Spurn a few times: bleak indeed, though I quite like that ‘nature in the raw’ sort of thing occasionally. Preferable to Cleethorpes across the estuary anyway

The church at Patrington – the ‘Queen of Holderness’ – is a magnificent building

Cleethorpes is populated by dog muck, brown water, and Grimsby Town supporters. Best avoided.

Absolutely this. It was the first course I attended back in 1985 and I remember very well the slightly seedy feel of the place – in the Silver Ring 20 minutes before the opener, snaggle-toothed bookmaker Bobby Mack (I think) suddenly shouting “11/8 the field” and everything coming to life. The down-at-heel nature of the place was definitely part of the attraction. At the end of the meeting the discarded bookies sheets and papers fluttering in the breeze (never been there when it wasn’t windy even during the three day August “festival”) almost had me hypnotised. I seem to recall Charlie Moore had a big-priced winner that day making the not-very-long trip across the road.
I can feel a trip to the shed to get out the relevant Superform annual to breathe in some more of this nostalgia.
