I have been very impressed with this young jockey over this past year. He seems to have everything going for him. What makes him so good, or not if that’s what you think?
April 9, 2013 at 15:21 #435862Excellent young talent.
What makes him so good?
He’s won on so many horses that I’ve backed recently.
What’s particularly impressed me is his judgement of pace in big races and gets horses jumping well.
For example Beneficient in the Jewson. Set a strong pace, asking him up for some exceptional leaps for a novice. Still going well himself – it would’ve been easy for him to panic and go with Dynaste when that one pressed on 3 out. Cooper recognised the pace had been strong up to that point and let Scudamore and Geraghty go past. Then challenged again at the last, when the other two had paid for going too soon. Both Dynaste and Captain Conan impressive in winning at Aintree since. I have little doubt those two will prove themselves better than Benefficient in time, but it was (thankfully for me) a superior ride that won the Jewson.
Proved that no fluke on another outsider, when doing a similar trick at Aintree in the Maghull. Taking on a known front runner in Overturn with Special Tiara at a cracking pace. Putting in the best round of jumping and forcing errors from his rivals. However, despite again still going well himself, did not chase Maguire when Overturn’s jockey increased an already fast pace. Challenging at the last and taking over close home when Overturn had nothing left.
He’s also done just as well holding horses up with Flaxen Flare and tracking the pace with Our Conor. Jumping well both times.
Bryan Cooper is a Champion jockey in the making.
Value Is EverythingApril 9, 2013 at 23:12 #435905Bryan Cooper has improved beyond recognition in the past year. As GT says, he has won some recent major races by out-thinking the other jockeys. That is the mark of a very good rider.
Although not a winning effort, his ride on Won In The Dark in the Aintree Hurdle was another very good one. Spot him patting the horse down the neck and tweaking its ears mid-race. Timmy Murphy is a big believer in doing this with quirky horses and it is good to see another jockey with the same idea.
April 12, 2013 at 12:18 #436078I agree with everything written above. He looks like he could go right to the top.
Its a shame that he looks like he may lose the ride on Our Conor though.April 12, 2013 at 13:16 #436083He is a star…

Its a shame that he looks like he may lose the ride on Our Conor though.Have to agree with you on this one. I really like this horse and it will be interesting to see if Danny Mullins gets the same out of him. My Champion Hurdle money is staying in my pocket for the time being.
April 13, 2013 at 19:16 #436190Started following racing seriously about 10 years ago so missed Walsh/Geraghty coming through the ranks. Seen a few good ones come through since like O’Regan/Townsend/Brennan. All I consisdered when younger really bloody good jockeys who could go a long way. Watching this lad Cooper in the last 18 months or so he seems to have that little bit extra, probably the same as a Walsh/Geraghty in the late 90s. Definitely one to follow and witha great career ahead of him, touch wood. Would not be surprised if he took over one of them at Nicholls/Henderson in the future.
May 7, 2013 at 11:05 #438927Out for up to year with a broken leg.
May 7, 2013 at 11:59 #438931Sad news indeed, although expect Cooper to be back a lot quicker than a year.
Bad injuries like this happen more frequently on a firm surface. Officially "good", but have a look at the times at Down Royal.
Value Is EverythingMay 7, 2013 at 13:00 #438936Seems like a personable chap and clearly a very good rider. I’m sure we all wish him the very best.
Not trying to be flippant, but if a NH jockey could choose a time of year to have such an injury…
