"Martin Broughton, the chairman of British Airways and ex-chairman of Liverpool FC, is expected to lead a takeover bid for the Tote, the Governement’s betting firm. Gala Coral, Betfred and Sportech are also believed among the potential bidders."

Interesting to read Fred Done’s reasoning for bidding for the Tote yesterday (something he’s been planning for seven years.) He makes a big play on geography, that his organisation and the Tote are within spitting distance of each other and they can merge head offices without many redundancies.

His case for supporting racing was very thin, almost an afterthought. Not a proposal I’ll be cheering on with my Go Fred! oversized foamie.
