Dear Racing Forum,
The British Horseracing Authority has today launched a new ticketing and information portal, http://www.gototheraces.com
The site is following on from the success of gojumpracing.com, which was nominated for Best Promotion of a Sport by a Governing Body at the Sports Industry Awards 2009.
The site is designed to be a one-stop-shop for tickets for ALL British meetings, as well as offering discounts and promotions on many fixtures.
Current great offers, some of which are completely exclusive to the site, include:
• Huge discounts for groups of 10 or more for Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday of Royal Ascot, including up to 33% off Grandstand tickets and up to £7.50 off Silver Ring;
• 10% off all tickets for July meeting at Newmarket;
• 20% group discount for Coral Eclipse;
• 10% off all tickets for King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Meeting
+ many moreWe hope that this site helps you enjoy a day at the races for less!
Many thanks

May 28, 2009 at 13:58 #230648you should remove the full stop on the end of your link …. if you actually want people to visit the site. 2/10 for the press release!
May 28, 2009 at 14:01 #230649This has now been amended. Many thanks for pointing this out underscore, much appreciated.

All very fine, but what about ‘Muggins’ who being a ‘Billy Nomates’ wishes to attend Perth on his own? Discount for early purchase – Diddly Squat!
Or let’s say I wish to attend a Musselburgh midweek meeting. £15 a ticket gives me no discount and then of course ‘Please note, a £2.50 admin fee will be added to your order’. I can buy the ticket for £13 on the racecourse website (although even they now add a £1.50 admin fee).
And at Hamilton I can get a ‘generous’ £1 off if there’s 20 or more of me.
The word ‘path’ ‘garden’ ‘up’ and ‘led’ come to mind, though not necessarily in that order.
Pardon me for the heinous crime of being a lone racegoer, but that’s the way I am.
Unimpressed Rob
May 28, 2009 at 14:26 #230654It certainly doesn’t come as a surprise to me that Ascot are having to offer discounts. I will never go to Royal Ascot again after my experience of the appalling new facilities.
May 28, 2009 at 14:34 #230655Dear robnorth,
Many thanks for your comments, they are duly taken into account.
I would respond by saying that we are not claiming to give every single racegoer discounts to every single race meeting every day of the year. It may be that for some of the meetings you wish to attend that we cannot provide you with cheaper tickets than buying the ticket on the door.
However at the same time we will save a lot of people a lot of money, and this does include the lone racegoer. For example, the lone racegoer at Newmarket, Ascot etc will save 10% off their tickets through us.
In addition we will be adding more promotions throughout the year to keep your eyes open for. I would like to point out that in the Jumps season we did an exclusive FREE TICKETS promotion for a race meeting at Musselburgh, as well as some fantastic 50% off all tickets at Ascot offers. We are negotiating special offers all the time and it is well worth checking our site.
Maybe for the meetings you have described we cannot save you money, but at the same time maybe on another day we will.
However, your feedback is much appreciated, and I wish you all the best in finding the best possible value.
Regards.

You rather conveniently ignore the bit about the ‘Admin Fee’, but then presumably you will spin me the usual line about ‘nothing we can do, ….policy of credit card companies, blah, blah, blah….’
Dear BHA
The first point is fine, but Ascot is 350 miles away and Newmarket not a lot closer so that doesn’t help me much. Somebody took the BHA to task on another thread over their lack of geographical knowledge, and I’m starting to have some sympathy.
I know you gave FREE TICKETS (I can read and understand, you don’t have to put it in CAPITALS, you know) for Musselburgh on one day, but what use is 50% off Ascot tickets to me when I live in Dunfermline? Unless of course you can add cheap travel and accomodation to the offer.
Maybe for the meetings you have described we cannot save you money, but at the same time maybe on another day we will.
Or maybe not……
Unconvinced Rob
May 28, 2009 at 15:15 #230663I do understand your comments about geographical issues, and we are doing our best to address this.
You will see that we have placed offers for Ayr, Carlisle, Newcastle and Doncaster up on the site, and have had previous offers for Musselburgh, including the free tickets one.
I would suggest that the choice to use the site or not is totally up to you. If you can get your tickets cheaper on the door then I would advise to do that, but then again if another great ticket offer for Musselburgh, like the free tickets one or something along those lines, pops up then it would seem a shame not to use it!
The choice is totally yours.
May 28, 2009 at 15:15 #230664Thanks for posting up the link BHA.
I think it’s a good idea and step in the right direction.

What was the thought process in deciding to waste money developing gojumpsracing.com, only to duplicate that effort in making gototheraces.com inclusive of jumps meetings? Do the same discounts apply to both sites?
Just out of interest – how many meetings per month, on average, are cheaper to attend via your website rather than that of the racecourse involved?
May 28, 2009 at 15:19 #230666Dear Equitrack,
There was no duplication or wastage of money involved at all- the new site gototheraces.com is simply an expansion of gojumpracing.com with extra features and inclusive of all race meetings. Absolutely no duplication was involved, it is the same site but just expanded.
Gojumpracing.com has now
become
gototheraces.com, if you see what I mean.
May 28, 2009 at 15:35 #230669Good luck with this, anything that encourages people to take an interest in the sport should be encouraged imo.
Real shame about the admin fee.
You should also have the option to pick the tickets up at the racecourse. It would give the site more access to people who may want to purchase at short notice plus overseas customers who obviously wouldn’t have a UK postal address.
May 28, 2009 at 15:43 #230672Well I’ve had a look.
Newmarket July meeting appealed – on the list of major meetings it’s got Jul 9th as Ladies Day and then again as July Cup day – the latter should be Jul 10th.
Alongside the dates is a link ‘Book Tickets’. Click on that and the result is a page not found message. At which point, I suspect most people will lose interest.
The devil is in the detail ……………
May 28, 2009 at 15:43 #230673Dear Cavelino Rampante,
Many thanks indeed for your feedback, and just to let you know I am in complete agreement.
We are currently working on a project to make sure tickets can be picked up on the day, and thus purchased more last minute.
As you will appreciate though this is a very tough and laborious job- there are 60 racecourses and we need to clarify booking processes, training of staff etc with each of them. Such is the nature of racing!
However we sincerely hope to have addresses this as soon as we can, and appreciate that it is one issue we need to address.
Kind regards,
Robin
May 28, 2009 at 15:48 #230677Dear apracing,
Thanks for pointing this out to us. This is now fixed and the offer is live.
A minor technical teething issue, no new site launches without them!
Thanks indeed for the spot though.
May 28, 2009 at 15:51 #230678Dear apracing,
Many thanks for the spot. We have now addressed this and the offer is now correct and live.
A slight teething issue, no site ever launched without one! Now corrected though and many thanks indeed for the feedback.
May 28, 2009 at 15:52 #230679Dear BHA
Are you really still selling tickets for Great Leighs ?
