Interesting article by Tony Smurthwaite in today’s Post. Talks about the sort of information trainers have on horses’ fitness that the public are denied.
He mentions Brian Ellison’s yard and its use of weighbridges, GPS, heart monitors… You know – all the stuff that The Rabble say we can’t afford as money is so tight (while giving themselves 50k pay rises in an age of global austerity).
I’ve checked out the decription of his gallops and it looks like the perfect venue to stage actual races: weighing facilities, GPS in saddle cloths, 6-12f races, flat and jumps, turf/all-weather, ample stabling such that field size-limits wouldn’t have to be imposed to remove 16 runner handicaps, no mention of any artifical watering facilities…..
Carlsberg don’t do racecourses, but if they did they’d probably look something like this:
May 26, 2010 at 20:50 #297058Langton Wold was the last place i saw dessie in the flesh He’d just carted mark Dwyer for about 3 furlongs.
He was silohetted on top of the hill as I was stood on the opposite side I saluted him & said goodbye old friend we’ll not meet again.
I love it up there & am really looking forward to a visit to Star Cottage Stables next month to see Avro Anson & Dancing Bay.
It’s only 45 minute drive from home which is great.
