I rather like Susan Boyle but not her makeover so much…should have left well alone..lol
How a voice doesn’t match the appearance…listening to her ‘Cry Me A River’ on youtube you just wouldn’t believe it’s her.

What I object to is the sexualisation of children often seen on these shows, such as last night’s Hollie Steel, 10 year old singing ballerina, as the camera panned her body from bottom to top – I found quite disturbing. I don’t disapprove of parents allowing their children full reign to display their talents but they should exercise more control over how close t.v. cameras are allowed to intrude.

My favourite is Julian Smith, the Saxophonist. I hope he gives Boyle a run for her money but perhaps he doesn’t have mass appeal.

I think since the opening mass hysteria over somene who could sing better than they look, people are realising that actually whislt quite good, not that good in reality. If she was very good looking her voice would have been deemed average IMOI liked the Sax guy too…

If you think Simon Cowell wasn’t aware of Susan Boyle’s singing talent beforehand, then his manipulative processes are working a treat. The fact is that his researchers and producers had already auditioned Miss Boyle, and actively encouraged her to maintain her dowdy look, knowing full well of the resulting furore which would follow. Of course Cowell knew, just as he knew beforehand about Paul Potts, Andrew Johnston and the little singing ballerina – and all the other good ( and bad ) acts. He controls and pulls every last string on that show.

My youngest daughter ( yes her again  ) is such a cynic. Her main gripe this time is with the dance troupes which appear on the show. She says that they are ten a penny throughout the UK – all doing more or less the same thing – and all as mediocre as each other.

Like me though, she wants the most talented to win. In this case, Susan Boyle – by a mile. Go Susan !

The whole of Scotland is behind you.

You’re certainly not alone in despising the show, Neil.

Simon Cowell is only too aware that the real draw of 80% of The X Factor programming is to laugh at the hapless, hopeless and truly delusional contestants who dream of super-stardom. In Britain’s Got Talent he has the perfect vehicle to extend that, but with three added bonuses; he can exploit the even more delusional (across a vast range of disciplines), he can exploit children (and people’s inclination to vote on a scale of puppy-dog eyes, rather than sensibility) and he can exacerbate the obligatory sob-stories (George Sampson is not, by any stretch of the imagination, the best at what he does – there are children the country over dancing like that just for fun).

In truth I find some of the show’s content utterly deplorable. I have no problem with children wishing to showcase their talents – after all, who has more confidence than a ten-year-old uncorrupted by the world – but some of the outfits even pre-teens are encouraged to wear is sickening (this is the problem with having popstars like Jo Jo who, at just thirteen, can be heard singing about love – no teenager is capable of understanding that – and is seen in videos with significantly older boys and generally tight/revealing clothing).

I’m just glad it isn’t license-payers’ money be used to fund this reprehensible bilge.

Her go at ‘Cry me a River’ is pretty good (needs to sort out her top-end vibrato) but to no great surprise lacks the depth, sensuality and world-weary resignation of both Ella Fitzgerald’s and Julie London’s stellar renditions of what is indisputibly a great song

cf. the glass-like virginal purity of Karen Carpenter’s voice and the rich, rounded mellowness of Joan Baez’s

As for ‘makeovers’ well Van Morrison did okay without one didn’t he? Thank gawd

    I love this program .. :D

.. there are some really talented so-called normal people walking around. Those who like to think themselves talented aren’t as special as they would like to think they are, Cheryl Cole for example.

I do generally find this programme entertaining, its mostly freak show, and generally "Britain has very little if any talent whatsoever, and we will simply applaud the average, or anything so bad that it becomes good comedy, intentionally or not".

Last year I thought that little girl (fariah smith, or whatever her name was), was a plant, cowell was smiling before she even came on stage. However with Susan Boyle I’m not sure, she did seem to surprise them, and I dont think amanda holden has sufficient acting talent to make us think she was surprised if she wasnt.

However at the same time, Susan Boyle’s had all the hallmarks of something that looks a bit dubious, the song choice, the quality of the backing track etc, all seemed a bit too quality for some little old lady merely trying out in a talent comp, and obviously she does have previous (if low key) fame when it comes to singing. However, at the same time, she has clearly been singing for some time, probably knows her stuff, and could well have been picking out an audition song for BGT for the last few seasons that this show has been on.

FWIW I agree about last years winner sam whatever his name was, he had very little talent whatsoever. When you type breakdancing into youtube, and see what they can do, and then watch what this comp throws up, then its quite clear that talent isnt really what is needed to win.

I personally thought that freakish woman, with her super talented "dancing (?)" dog should have won last years one. I cant remember exact details but I’m sure I heard somewhere that the dogs life had went considerably downhill after his shock defeat (mood swings, depression and perhaps even a mention of drink), terrible stuff. We build them up to knock them down…

The BGT’s producers have already admitted that Susan Boyle had already been auditioned – so they knew all about her.

When Simon Cowell said ( supposedly tongue in cheek ) that when she walked on stage he knew something special was about to happen, he wasn’t joking.

As for Amanda Holden’s surprised expression. It’s called careful editing.

Its just a light entertainment program, a good bit of family viewing for a Saturday night. It doesn’t surprise me at all that acts are plants and the reaction of the judges, crowd, etc is all clever editing. Still a good show, I’d rather have that than big brother any day.

Heard Clive James on Radio 4 on Sunday talking about this. The BBC have now got the script on the front-page of their website. Really interesting read.

Oh his balls have dropped all right. He is a fairly rare countertenor and can also sing bass. His favorite song is Sarah Brightmans " A Question of Honour "
I hate the show though and have only seen glimpses when I pass through the family room.Another extension of the gloryfication of peoples humiliation in my view. My TV is on permanent racing or sport
