Watch out Ian, careful what you say. Yeats has a file on all of us.
July 28, 2015 at 13:38 #1147616Found last night’s programme very interesting following the fortunes of two punters, who although were very different had similar talents for picking winners. The problem was, Steve, instead of sticking to golf had to bet on anything that moved. The type of guy who you would meet in a pub and want you to bet on the colour of the next car past the door.
July 28, 2015 at 14:20 #1147691I think it’s a bit misleading to judge the on-course punter as anything but a mug just because he had two or three winners on that particular day of racing.
His attitude to value, his over-reliance on visual clues and a few of his massive generalisations hint that he rarely turns a profit.
July 28, 2015 at 14:38 #1147718Bookies are the scum of the earth ….the punters who frequent betting shops are on the same level
How does this possibly attract new customers to racing for those watching who dont bet or indeed follow racing at all ….not very likely I would say
Racing needs new punters , new betting customers , programs like this make such a prospect almost impossible
We have experts on this site who claim to know the score , all fine and good …but to a complete outsider looking in , it must seem entirely seedy and avoidable at all costs
Scum rule racing ….tote monopoly yes its the way forward , but sadly it will never happen , why ….the scum will not allow it
This is my personal opinion , I hope it does not offend too many , but the truth hurts sometimes

July 28, 2015 at 16:08 #1147880I think it’s an interesting and enjoyable propgramme. This isn’t made to inform those who are already familiar with gambling – especially horse racing, it’s for the general public’s consumption, so will inevitably make some points which seem obvious to “Racing Forum” followers. So far, it hasn’t concerned itself too much with such things as the levy / bookmakers’ funding of racing and the like – maybe next week. But why should it bother? To the average Joe that’s not particularly interesting or entertaining.
The presenter/narrator isn’t trying to appeal to deeply knowledgable gamblers (why, they even called it the “Epsom Derby” – a race which true racing bods know does not exist!
).
That there are moral and social issues where gambling becomes an addiction hasn’t been skirted but didn’t need an in-depth psycho-social anaylsis. I felt they got it right. Show there’s a problem, leave it to others to moralise / make judgements.
I have no particular love of bookmakers but those who slam them and those who use them might be better employed aiming their sights at the National Lottery – now that really is robbery!July 28, 2015 at 16:13 #1147882I think Andy was telling the truth when he said his betting paid for days out at the races. If he was an inveterate liar he would not admit to backing a £ a bet.

I was at Portmerion a couple of months ago, but I paid to get in and amazingly I found my way out too!
Value Is EverythingJuly 28, 2015 at 16:27 #1147908Strongly suspect cameras followed many punters at Donny and only showed the one who did the best that particular day.

Good post Insomniac.

Are the bookmakers really better than the lottery? How much do the bookmakers put into good causes out of their FOBT profits?
Did you see on last night’s programme the scum in the Coral office pondering about the 5 grand bet on Elm Park at 2/1, they couldn’t believe their luck with 5/2 available with other bookmakers and even bigger available on the exchanges. Even then they had to think twice

All that profit without risk, went into Corals satchel rather than horse racings. If they’d been top price on Elm Park you would have been lucky to get a fiver on it.
July 28, 2015 at 17:14 #1147968“Scum of the earth”… I’d be interested to know what you call people traffickers and loan sharks
July 28, 2015 at 18:57 #1148135Without watching the recording again, I believe the odds compilers made their least favoured horse of two market leaders favourite. I’ve always suspected this was going on.

Nobody going to pick up on this little beauty?

What are you on about Woolfie?
Value Is EverythingJuly 29, 2015 at 06:45 #1149900The creation of false favourites, Ginger.
July 29, 2015 at 07:12 #1149921So is ‘taking an opinion’ no longer allowed Wolfie ?
