He looked sharp enough at Ascot and jumped pretty clean

Ok, what is left for Shishkin?
2 miles – no, way too sharp and his jumping isn’t up to that quick 2m pace.
3 miles or more – no, GDC has too much ammunition for him and there might be other horses on the horizon.
2m4f-2m5f – probably the likeliest distance and a softer race, though I doubt there won’t be anything better in the Ryanair than Envoi Allen.

I wouldn’t be to quick to write off Shiskin at 3m plus , APT is another example of a horse being damaged by winning a GC , let’s see how GDC is , there,s no getting away from the fact Henderson has been to slow on getting him upped in distance , it’ll be prep , OH the GC next year surely , he,s a bit of a freak , Ahoy Senor is a solid just below top class horse , beating him is a decent starting point

Surely he will stay 3 miles+. I think this was an impressive performance as a third race in two months. I suppose it will be somehting like Charlie Hall – King George – Gold Cup next year.

Just watched the replay. Ahoy Senor’s connections must be tearing their hair out. He surely would have won if he had jumped only slightly better.

The problem is CAS there’s always an excuse with him

Agree HDLG. He does not jump well enough at the highest level – simple as that. But he must have traded very short in running today.

Given his jumping issues, might a switch to hurdles suit Ahoy Senor? The Stayers Hurdle does not exactly look like a strong division at the moment.

Gdc won’t be running in any of the UK grade 1s bar the gold cup over 3 miles

And there are no good novice 3 mile horses imo coming through

So I’d be very surprised if he wasn’t campaigned accordingly

I knew coming to the last Ahoy Senor would be passed. He has only one pace, and if the jock doesn’t use that to put everything under pressure from as far out as possible, then he will always be vulnerable. Hughes riding today was solely because Fox (injured) called off to give himself every chance of riding Corach Rambler on Saturday.

Hughes tried a couple of different things at fences today – getting lower on the approach and taking charge to the extent he felt comfortable with, but on a first ride he was always going to be guessing a bit. Ahoy Senor reverted to jumping right, very possibly because the ground was a fair bit faster than it was at Cheltenham (he went slightly right there, but not nearly as bad as today). If that’s the case, then I wonder yet again if the horse is feeling some niggle and trying to protect his left side as he lands.

Such a shame. He is so game. Lucinda should get the best physio in the world in during the summer to see what can be found. If nothing is wrong, he’d be best back over hurdles.

This was his track, this was his kind of race, some would say today was actually a jockey upgrade – and the horse kept being presented at fences on a stride but, when asked to pick up, time and time again he put down.

Nice chaser, but he’s had more excuses made for him than for any horse in years.

Even on a going day, he’s just not quite top class, I’m afraid.

He will run more good races, no doubt, but he will never be one to have the mortgage on.
