He may have looked beat, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that he would have been. As I mentioned in my previous post, a lot can change on the Leopardstown run-in. The dual between Tranquil Sea and Golden Silver today being a prime example. The former came there cruising from the final bend, but the winner found plenty after the last.
Sizing Europe was idling. Look at the replay of him in the closing stages and watch his ears prick up at the finish. Plenty left in the tank, in my opinion. Whether or not he would have called on those reserves in a fight is one thing, but I don’t think he was beaten when Captain Cee Bee fell.
I don’t think Golden Silver found a great deal, not for the first time Tranquil Sea’s run just flattened out. He is essentially a bridle horse as is Sizing Europe.
You may want to believe Sizing Europe was idling but I suspect he was pretty tired and wouldn’t have picked up had he been challenged. The idea that he had ‘plenty left in the tank’ would stretch anyone’s imagination.
December 31, 2009 at 01:06 #266600Have not been on for some time, however if Captain Cee Bee jumps a clear round in the Arkle, I don’t think there will be anything that will beat him, he is a bull of a horse, two mile chasing is his vocation, 8-1 is great value.

In his younger days Sizing Europe was consistent enough so I take it he keeps himself fairly fit but perhaps like all good trainers heading for Cheltenham there was something left to work on or it could be he was having a bit of an off day hence his jumping.
It could also be put down to the fact it’s the first time he’s gone as fast over fences. He is after all a novive chaser but then again so is Captain Cee Bee.
BIGBUCKS I wasn’t knocking Sizing Europe I happen to like the horse but that was some performance from Captain Cee Bee after the lay off. Of the two I would expect him to show more improvement.
A major plus for them both is they are already Cheltenham winner and on a line through Osana (Greatwood Hurdle)the form looks rock solid.
At this stage it is difficult not to visualise either not being involved in the finish.
Like TAPK says Somersby looks a really nice horse but I will stick to what I said. He’ll win a lot of good chases in the future but he may just be below top class. The form of his race has taken 2 bad knocks albeit in a different sphere where PN’s is concerned but I would like to see Somersby win at least one more chase before making a final judgement on him. The Irish form simply looks much stronger
December 31, 2009 at 10:55 #266634One of the main reasons he has No chance of winning the Arkle, the other will be the ground,he will be outpaced! If you haven"t had a bet yet get on Somersby at 8/1!
So you’re implying that a horse who finished a staying on third in a Supreme Novice has enough pace for a Arkle, but a horse who mixed it with the best over the minimum distance, collecting a Grade One in the process, hasn’t?
I think both have the talent to be thereabouts, but if it came down to pure speed at the finish, I don’t think there’s a horse who could live with Sizing Europe.
Bos i"m not implying it,i"m telling it as fact,Somersby was only closing "Go Native" down up the hill, plenty speed there dont you think? But more importantly Somersby responds to pressure and will find the required extra that seperates the good from the Great! Sizing Europe will travel like a good un,but as soon as he comes off the bridle he will find Zilch! Then when his jockey needs to chuck the coals on he will flatten out and tie up! Thats if he actually gets round, never mind about even getting to the race, what with his history!
January 2, 2010 at 17:49 #267153Captain ran extremely well but fell and is going straight to the Arkle apparently
Going for the Baileys Arkle on Irish Champion Hurdle day all going well.
January 3, 2010 at 14:57 #267365The Arkle will give McCoy and JP a chance to correct the error they made when McCoy rode Binocular to defeat against Captain CB in the Supreme Novice two years ago.Harty told them that he would win and they refused to believe him that day.Wee Anthony has come to respect Captain CB since then.Had he forsaken Binocular and ridden at Leopardstown I believe the Captain would have won.Sooner or later they will come together for a big win.
January 3, 2010 at 15:06 #267368No probs fist you make good points as usual, perhaps like you i was just defending his corner a little.
If Captain is having another run that’s certainly much more of a positive for him. I’m not doubting his ability for a second, as everyone knows though in a good Arkle everything needs to be just so.
