Hi –
Wanted to guage reaction/feelings on the new ‘Big Races’ section of the forum. Is it working and should we keep it or revert back to just having these discussions in the ‘Horse Racing’ section?
I’ll run a poll here and in the ‘Big Races’ section and tally the votes.
My own view is that it is working out Ok – plenty viewings and posts and the horse racing section seems to be going along ok and is less cluttered but I’m open to persuasion.
August 2, 2008 at 23:15 #175872Have supported the idea of a separate section from the outset and nothing I have seen has made me change my mind
August 2, 2008 at 23:39 #175875Wasn’t a fan initially but it’s grown on me.

The big race section is working fine, but to the ultimate detriment of the main forum imo.
Maybe it’s just me, but the prospect of potential new members lighting onto the main forum, the Horse Racing discussion board, and thinking how dull it is – never to return – is worrying, at least.August 3, 2008 at 08:33 #175892I quite like it to be honest, it is set out well.
August 3, 2008 at 08:51 #175893I agree with RH. Would be better to have the section incorporated into the main forum again.
August 3, 2008 at 08:53 #175894An inspired direction but possibly precocious.
I hope to add some hopefully useful historical thoughts. I do remember this house when it was split down the middle into chitchat I and chitchat II, when it was far more of a community. I can also remember the one section of Betfair and Flutter. There was far more of an avengelist churchgoers feel, however splitting was thought the way forward as hordes joined the debate. There was a big outrcry and sadness on Betfair when it happened and that model paved the way for less resistance in smaller forums. It seems the progressive way forward. It is more forensically pleasing but it can break hearts.
I personally find the stickies that lord in here rather irritating. My eye naturally goes to the top and Wendy Craig is not what I always want to find.
The vote is a good idea but ask the audience sometimes get it wrong even with four choices. The move may be precocious in that the main horseracing forum cannot sustain leakage – it is a matter of opinion. I certainly like the idea of getting quickly to big race debate and encouraging whitecoat debate
I might propose an idea and that would be a halfway house where big race discussion would be moved to the main forum on the eve of the race – or in the case of The Grand National a week before – possibly yes as a dreaded sticky .This may be considered a bit messy though and is just an idea.
Ricky Lake has suggested the main section is beoming like the film Waterland. I feel the forum works reasonably well and yes it is bound to fluctuate as different people leave and join and go off to Scarborough with bucket and spade and Southend for a jellied eels fest. I have re-valued my opinion and now believe we need more ‘whitecoats’ and forensic posting to heighten interest aka the type of opinion in the big racing section.
You might wonder why I have big views and contribute so little to either section. It is a strange strange world, and stranger still I was reading an involved scientific report late into the night entitled – Eminent whitecoat Jim JTS discovers a strange life form on the planet Mars and decides to water it.
August 3, 2008 at 10:07 #175899Being lazy i prefered it in the main section, it never occurs to me to look in another place for what i consider a racing topic!
August 3, 2008 at 10:56 #175906I thought we had had this debate and all that racey stuff for actual races was supposed to be in ‘Daily Lays and Plays’.
I don’t really have an opinion so long as it works.

Maybe it should be the main section – with a separate section for racing politics and other frippery?
The signs are that’s the way it’s heading anyway!Incidentally, as an experiment, I’ve just cast a second vote on the other section.
Robert Mugabe doesn’t have anything to do with it, does he?August 3, 2008 at 11:36 #175913For goodness’ sake get rid of it, and some of the others as well, this site is far too fragmented.
Why on earth does it need fifteen, yes, fifteen separate sub-forums? That’s almost a forum each for very active member!
August 3, 2008 at 13:22 #175929Although I’ve sat on the fence on this one and voted "not bothered", I do think that if the Big Races section is retained, consideration should be given to some of the suggestions made here.
I think reet is right that it might be working to the detriment of the main (?) forum and new visitors could be perplexed/put off.
August 3, 2008 at 18:58 #175954I like the big race discussions but tend to think that too many sections are to the detriment of the site as most first timers would just go to the Racing section (I know how I cruise other forums).
I would suggest returning to the old style but somebody (presumably Corm) should start a big race thread for each event at an appropriate time before the race (obviously longer for Cheltenham, Aintree, Derby etc).
It should be earlier enough to get the ante-post nuances but not too early that if finds itself buried halfway down and another starts nearer the top.
It seems that people are happy to join in an established thread (me included) but rarely make the effort to start a fresh one – usually presuming that the subject has already been well discussed before.
August 3, 2008 at 21:49 #175978I said my bit on the other forum but it seems the masses are saying keep it. That’s cool!!! only right we should go with the majority.
August 3, 2008 at 22:29 #175982I prefer all horse racing stuff in the same forum.

August 3, 2008 at 23:10 #175984Like DJ, it’s grown on me, but I’m still against. Time is precious and I didn’t think it was broke….
I reiterate my suggestion that major races could have a stickied thread started some time before. - AuthorPosts
