The Guardian have just revealed that Big Fella Thanks was put down following his injury at Cheltenham in May.
No doubt a debate will follow (already being teed up by Chris Cook) but this is just heartbreaking. The horse was an absolute model – 10 years of sound service, the safest of safe jumpers (especially at Aintree) and still showing sparkle at 15.
RIP
October 30, 2017 at 14:54 #1324152Terrible news. I guess we all agree that he deserved a lot better. And we also have to admit that some connections have a much better timing when it comes to retiring a horse. Michael O’Leary is a true gentleman to his horses and really knows what’s going on. Can’t recall any of his horses having had a run too much.
Rest in Peace Big Fella Thanks!
HOWEVER NO SYMPATHIES FOR THE CONNECTIONS FOR KEEPING HIS DEATH A SECRET.
October 30, 2017 at 18:40 #1324190To be fair, this horse had been very close to Harry Findley’s heart [not sure who owned him more recently] and I think everyone connected was very upset by it. And, look what happened to Kauto Star when his owner tried to wrap him in cotton wool [and the criticism he got for it]. Have lost count of the horses that have died whilst running in what was meant to be their last race. RIP Big Fella…
October 30, 2017 at 22:53 #1324228What awful news and a very sad week in racing losing so many much loved horses.
I thought Big Fella Thanks was happily retired and now we find out he has gone.
Please no more last races for these old stalwarts of the turf, just bring them along so that people can say their goodbyes at the racecourse and and return them home to enjoy their retirement.
Sadly missed.
Big Fella Thanks
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...October 31, 2017 at 02:46 #1324250This is an especially sad one.
A hero of a horse we’ve all seen on the Saturday racing for the last 10 years.
RIP Fella
