Wins again. Extends his record wins sequence. Not one thread on either this or the Big Races section. The yawns echo around the industry.
Denman and Kauto Star are gone. For the love of god Nicholls, forget the Trainers Title…….when is he going chasing?
December 1, 2012 at 23:24 #421418He turns 10 in January PC, I think the ship’s sailed. Can’t you and the other naysayers just appreciate a special talent for what he is?

Are you interested in anything else but staying chasers PC?

It was an uncompetitive race because no other good staying hurdler wanted to take him on. Just as a similar race (for that money) over FENCES with an OUTSTANDING staying chaser in the race – would be uncompetitive.
Big Buck’s is the best staying HURDLER we’ve EVER seen…
He’s NOWHERE NEAR the best staying CHASER we’ve ever seen.
I’d MUCH rather he keeps over hurdles.I was at Newbury today and privileged to see such a wonderful horse. Didn’t see anyone yawning.

ENJOY!
Value Is EverythingDecember 1, 2012 at 23:50 #421424I think the owner, rather than trainer, has made it clear he’ll never be tried again over fences. He’s been utterly dominant over hurdles at staying distances. A joy to watch. No real depth or excitement in the discipline though which means his great record is somewhat overlooked. I don’t know about chasing but I’d love to see him take on some of the top hurdlers over 2m 4f.

As usual you state the obvious whilst missing the point. Its unfair on the horse – nobody cares Ginger. If there was a chaser or a 2m hurdler winning for the 19th straight times in graded races, there would be an explosion of interest every time the horse ran.

I’d love to see him take on some of the top flat horses at 2m4f with a couple of pacemakers to help him.

Perhaps the Queen Alexandra?
December 2, 2012 at 12:43 #421456Queen Alex is the obvious race Paul, but why keep BB in training over the summer, just to run once on (usually) firm ground?

It’s "obvious" that staying hurdlers is not your thing PC, imploring Nicholls to run BB over fences belies your true feelings. You see what you want to see. Wouldn’t expect an ultra-uncompetitive race (SP 1/12) to have a thread in the Big-Race or this section… You’d only get the usual suspects saying he should be going chasing/flat racing. It would be "unfair on the horse" to go back "chasing" like you want him to PC. You should’ve been there at Newbury yesterday, an "explosion of interest" when BB appeared. People weren’t interested in the race, just the horse.
Value Is EverythingDecember 2, 2012 at 13:37 #421459He’s 9 years old, has won 18 graded races in a row and Timeform STILL have a + after his rating, thinking he may be better than he has been able to show so far. I think he would be fascinating running in the Gold Cup with the right conditions and help with a very strong pace.
The one at Ascot of course.
If the ground is not soft enough fine don’t run him.December 2, 2012 at 16:01 #421474Are you interested in anything else but staying chasers PC?

I disagree – its constantly the least competitive discipline in NH, and the lack of interest in the race yesterday tells its own story. You reference the short price as the reason? Need i refer to a certain flat horse running at 1/10, 1/20 etc, who drummed up a fair bit of interest?
Its a real shame Big Bucks will end up retiring without testing himself. I live in hope, and its probably forlorn hope, that at least Quevega will challenge him in March instead of another penalty kick in the Mares race. Or should I just "enjoy" Quevega as well Ginge?
December 2, 2012 at 17:10 #421481Seeing Big Buck’s back over fences would frighten the living daylights out of me, and quite possibly the horse too. Though a tilt at some Flat prize would be acceptable and quite fun
Paul Nicholls has a self-confessed preference for chasers and as we all know is pretty adept at training them, so it speaks volumes that he, possibly encouraged by the owner, I wouldn’t know, has decided to leave him be and carve out a splendid career over hurdles
It’s all very well sending a young horse over fences after the near-regulation prep-schooling over hurdles in the hope they take to the rather different demands chasing places on jumping but Big Buck’s despite Nicholls’ best efforts clearly didn’t take to fences, despite some superficial ‘useful form’ over them which was nevertheless uncomfortable viewing
If the young horse couldn’t be taught new tricks there’s next to no chance the old one will, particularly after being on essentially auto-pilot during so many runs over hurdles
I prefer chasing to hurdling, both as a spectacle and betting medium, but have thoroughly enjoyed watching Big Buck’s rack up his winning sequence. I feel no sense of ‘what could have been’
But what did he beat?…who cares, admire the individual for what he is; it’s not his fault to be around when there’s a lone star in a dark sky

According to an interview with Willie Mullins today, the only way Quevega will meet Bib Bucks is if he travels to Punchestown.
December 2, 2012 at 17:36 #421483its a myth that this horse and connections havent "been extended". The sheer consistency is a challenge in itself, especially with a horse that isnt seemingly naturally straightforward. To get him straight each and every time is not something i would back all trainers to achieve or all horses to be capable of
There are a lot of moaners on another forum about this. complainingthat tehres no betting angle
The answer to that is there are…how many races a week?

December 2, 2012 at 17:39 #421485Kauto may be the Ditcheat star of stars, but in my opinion, Big Buck’s is the best racehorse Paul Nicholls has trained.
Take the fences and hurdles away and Big Buck’s would have laughed at Kauto over 2 and half and three miles on the flat all day and every day of the week.
p.s. Willie Mullins ( and Quevega
) would run a mile if Paul Nicholls ever did decide to take him to Punchestown.Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
December 2, 2012 at 18:04 #421489Roll on Chelters – Big Bucks versus, erm, Mourad. And Quevega against, erm, dunno. Mouthwatering stuff.
