Trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. confirmed that IEAH Stable’s and Paul Pompa Jr.’s Big Brown will not run in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita on October 25 after he sustained an injury during a workout this morning.
“It looks like he grabbed his hoof in some kind of way,” Dutrow said after Big Brown, the nation’s top three-year-old, returned from Aqueduct’s firm turf course, where he worked six furlongs with defending Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Kip Deville in 1:12.93, breezing. “It is his right-front foot. It happened during the workout. He will not run in the Breeders’ Cup. I’m not sure about the rest of the year.”
Hoof problems are nothing new to Big Brown. After winning the Florida Derby, Kentucky Derby and Preakness, Big Brown came to Belmont Park where he hoped to become racing’s 12th Triple Crown winner in the June 7th Belmont Stakes. He suffered a quarter-crack on his left-front hoof in the days leading to that race that drew plenty of attention, but it was under control when he ran in the Belmont Stakes.
October 13, 2008 at 21:35 #184654He has now been retired.
“Big Brown has been retired,” Michael Iavarone, co-owner of IEAH Stables, told http://www.bloodhorse.com.
“He not only tore the bulb off his foot, but half the foot was torn off. We did everything we could to get to the Breeders’ Cup.
“It’s devastating. And what makes it even worse is that he worked great.”[/color:1y6k9owy]
October 13, 2008 at 22:38 #184659He’s always had terrible feet. I’m surprised he’s lasted as long as he has.
October 13, 2008 at 23:28 #184667According to the Blood Horse, he’s been retired.
October 14, 2008 at 00:16 #184677The horse is a decent runner but a raving smack rat,his trainer is someone i dont trust as far as I could throw him,.
Shame he and Curlin didnt get a chance too settle up, IE bet BB’s owners are kicking themselves they didnt run in the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont the other weekend, so another unsound horse needed drugs too be at his best retires, pardon me if I dont charge to use him. He looks a national hunt sire in the making…..
