A new low for ch4 today when they decided not to show the most interesting race of the day,the summer plate from market rasen
Yes it was running late due a lightning strike but they could have shown it by simply putting all the adverts on after the newbury3.50 and then going off air as soon as they finished at market rasen but they obviously couldn’t be botherd thus missing a nice moment for AP
Under high flyer this would have not have happened and perhaps shows a loss of interest in racing by channel four,as was the case with test cricket.Totally agree. Shocking from C4. But they couldn’t disrupt the 5 episodes of Come Dine With Me as this may have had to start 5 minutes late, thus putting all other programmes 5 minutes late. Would C4 been able to cope
July 20, 2014 at 08:28 #485995When Mick Fitz was asked on the Morning Line which horse Paul Hanagan should pick for the King George in a week’s time, (from clearly two strong contenders) his response was plain feeble: he should choose "the one he thinks will win". That combined with a most unsatisfactory interview of Geoff Banks by Tanya who didn’t challenge anything being said, illustrated how much this programme has deteriorated.
The afternoon coverage has way too much musically accompanied video content, much of which is irrelevant to the afternoon’s racing and obviously too much interviewing. The rot set in some years ago when presenters and TV cameras were allowed in the paddock and winner’s enclosure. Before then we would get proper pre-race analysis and usually plenty of time to see and appraise the runners.July 20, 2014 at 13:56 #486008Have been channel hopping this afternoon including the athletics on Channel 4, but every other time I flicked to the channel they were showing adverts, so it isn’t just racing that suffers these annoying advert breaks.
July 20, 2014 at 15:52 #486018I stopped watching Formula 1 when it switched to ITV and just got out of the habit of watching it even though it’s back with the BBC. I put up witht the ads on Ch4 because I love racing so much; any other sport and I’d not bother.

Deja vu This is exactly what my father said to me when I saw him yesterday. He’s really into his athletics, but was channel hopping between that and the golf. 5 times he turned over, 4 times adverts were on and the other time, there were 3 sat round a desk discussing, so in the end said blow it. I told him the Racing was full of adverts on Saturday.
July 21, 2014 at 20:27 #486112Mick Fitzgerald constantly interupting McGrath was breathtaking and as usual what he was interrupting with was banal trivia……really poor.
July 22, 2014 at 07:21 #486126Mick was definitely off the boil this Saturday. Apart from some of the above mentioned weaknesses he finished one particular bit of insight into jockeyship by saying it’s who is first past the lollipop that counts. Thanks for that!
I really wanted the new Channel 4 package to be a success. I’d long got tired of the Beeb’s attitude to the sport and wasn’t sorry to see the back of Big Mac in particular. Not due to his advanced age I hasten to add, but I just felt he added little to the coverage and by comparison Tanya would be more relevant.
Eighteen months in and I have to say I’m disappointed. Tanya clearly struggles when interviewing anybody else and looks increasingly uncomfortable. Far too litlle time spent on the horses in the oaddock, uninspired presenters, analyisis and even commentary. Definitely needs a shake up.July 22, 2014 at 07:42 #486127Channel 4 must realise they made a mistake ditching Big Mac,thommo and the greatest jockey. Just get them back and watch the figures go back up. Simples but we know they won’t want to lose face so the programme will descent into even more mediocrity.

Much as people like Big Mac, Tommo etc they are getting on John McCririck is around 75, Tommo is 63 they need to find the next generation but in looking for it they have found a lots of blandness and not people who can entertain.
July 22, 2014 at 20:32 #486175Whenever a sports commentator/presenter feels the need to tell us something is "really interesting" – it isn’t.
Whenever things other than the sport you are meant to be covering – like the hats females at the venue are wearing – become an item, that’s the Producers lacking faith in the interest the General Public has in the core product.
In football The World Cup Sells itself and TV doesn’t have to try too hard – never a good look.
Just cover the racing and people not born into racing but destined to form an interest in it will discover it as they have always done.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 26, 2014 at 14:14 #486504Sounds like Tania is dying, anyone going to volunteer to give m2m?
July 30, 2014 at 15:47 #486901Am I the only one who laughed when Joseph O’Brien blanked Gina Bryce after the Vintage Stakes? Topped only by AOB’s scuttling away when the unfortunate Ms Bryce tried to collar him.
Immediate post-race interviews? Pointless.

"Now listen now, this horse has so much speed, he’s sharp, he’s got a lot of speed now, listen now, did I say that this horse has a lot of speed?"
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
July 30, 2014 at 20:06 #486937Also amusing and blindingly obvious are Frankie Dettori’s clumsy attempts recently to feather his retirement nest by cutting his teeth as a pundit and thereby frequently refusing to play ball with the presenters when they try and treat him like a commenting jockey rather than a potential co presenter…..he is sadly not a presenter and his jockey’s insight doesn’t come across that great either.

When they asked Frankie which horse he would like to ride in the Gordon stakes he went for Somewhat because he was the highest rated and had the best form from The Eclipse. When Jim McGrath countered that the latter race panned out like two races with the ones held up never really getting into it, Frankie replied that Somewhat had still beaten good horses like The Fugue, and that "The form book never lies"
It was like painting by numbers meets local bookies logic where another horse who is "due a win" will be backed with confidence any minute.
Great Jockey in his day but he is not bringing anything other than his name to the TV gig.

July 31, 2014 at 06:30 #486996But just remember he is still one of only two racing names that non racing fans know [the other being McCririck]. A pal of mine who hardly ever goes racing ran to the winners enclosure to see him do a flying dismount at York one day

Can’t see how it can work while he is still riding but I think you are being a tad unfair regards his tipping ability Steve. Most jockeys would have picked Somewhat given a free choice I would have thought.
He was clear top on Racing Post form ratings, was nearly fav, so both punters and bookies thought he had a good chance and was only beaten a neck and head.
Didn’t McGrath tip Red Galileo in the same race? Tailed off last and beaten over 50 lengths
