Good interview with A P McCoy by Luke Harvey on At The Races yesterday. The best one I’ve seen since the big announcement for sure.
I don’t watch or follow much jumps racing these days, and although I recall hearing about McCoy’s fall at Worcester on Keep Presenting, I never realised the extent of his injuries until watching his interview yesterday.
Looking at an interview he gave to talkSport last Sunday, McCoy reveals …..
"I got injured one day at Royal Worcester, dislocating my collar bone, breaking three of my ribs and punctured my lung."
Chris Cook in an article on November 6 mentioned that the course doctor at Worcester suspected that McCoy had broken ribs in the fall.
Seems incredible to me given the extent of those longer term injuries, that McCoy is given clearance to ride again a few days later at Huntingdon.
Aside from the obvious welfare concerns, and of secondary importance in this case is the betting element. Surely the BHA should be informing customers of racing that the champion jockey of its National Hunt code is currently riding with broken ribs, a punctured lung and a dislocated collarbone. McCoy’s strike rate in the following 35 races up to his extended (voluntary?) absence in November dropped off to 17% (yes I know all the shrewdies piled in on the injury factor).
My perception is one of negligence and amateurism on behalf of the BHA, and the tail wagging the dog in this instance.
