“I don’t think the comparison to football is relevant really”

Football is an alternative betting option to football in the 2023 marketplace.

And while as Nathan says dodgy incidents occur, I’d say it’s not routine in football the way it is in racing.

Plus bookmakers don’t pay Levy on profits from sports betting so, with higher integrity and greater profitability, they have every reason to promote sports betting ahead of racing.

My point was that if football had a handicapping system, then you would see routine dodgy incidents occur.

Also where is the line here? Is a horse being backed from 5/1 into 2/1 ok but 10/1 into 2/1 is an integrity issue?

They have opened up a can of worms here.

I comprehend that very valid point from. you, sir.

But it’s not about whether people in racing are congenitally more corrupt than in other sports.

The bottom line is that my impression is that, largely for the reasons you allude to, the sport of racing manifestly is.

There are many valid reasons why the odds of a horse might not be stable – it’s never raced so the opening show is a guess, it’s returning from a lay-off so fitness is a guess at opening show, it’s highly ground dependant and the heavens just opened contrary to the weather forecast to name but three.

But all too often it’s something like first run in a handicap and “is today THE day?” is a guess at opening show.

    And therein the problems commence.

As far as I can see the only national paper to pick up on the story is “The Sun”. Its opening paragraph reads:

“A top trainer was left totally stunned after bosses barred his heavily-backed horse from running just two minutes before a race.”

Rather flattering to Mr Curran to describe him as a “top trainer”!

Isn’t the obvious point here that as long as there is a sport which depends on a) betting and b) handicapping, there will inevitably be a temptation to game the system or cheat?

Yes, but isn’t that a bit like saying tourists are more likely to get robbed in poor countries?

Whatever the reason, it makes tourists less likely to go there.

Sean Curran has been interviewed on the Nick Luck podcast, with Tom Stanley standing in for the usual host.

Curran says the Exeter stewards asked him about Lafan as well as his own horse.

The BHA must have something linking the two gambles. Why ask Curran otherwise?

The words i most hate when a bet goes down, they landed a nice touch…..comments by TV on the winning stable..
Just to be clear, my comments are about flat racing and not NH.
This is a reason why Id like to see the actual weights of the horse published, and the historical data available. Somewhere along the lines of the HK racing. But this wont happen.. gives that little too much info for off course punters..
Many years ago, I was given a tip for a horse to win a lowly handicap at Chester, 6 weeks in advance..it won..I have no trust in micky mouse meetings anymore..

Sorry to all for the rant..

If the same horse was trained by stoute, gosden, Appleby or haggas would the BHA have intervened?

    I highly doubt it

A bit like the IHRB and mcnally they are happy to take action against smaller trainers but not the big boys

“They are happy to take action against smaller trainers but not the big boys.”

That is certainly how it appears.

The BHA was prepared to order a horse trained by a “small trainer” to be withdrawn because of an alleged integrity issue over who actually owns the horse.

But the same BHA was quite satisfied for a horse in dual ownership trained by the champion trainer to be switched to sole ownership just days before a big race despite the other owner having just been arrested and put under investigation for financial irregularities. It has taken the FCA to step in to prevent the horse from running.

Not a very good look for the BHA. Another disastrous two days in the Harrington reign.
