Here’s our chance to take some compensation for the defeat of Cue Card in the Gold Cup.The 2nd ‘Djakadam’ and 3rd ‘Don Poli’ placed horses will give us a gauge as to just what might have happened at Cheltenham had Paddy Brennan not had a moment of madness at the 3rd last fence.I hope all run their race,if so ‘Cue Card’ will win easily.I do hope ‘Saphir du rheu’ isn’t the fly in the ointment, for as soft as he looks he still has ability.I wont get rich at 5/4 so I’ve had a treble with Garde le Victoire 4/1 and Footpad 6/1 to win my £5k that I was robbed of 3 weeks ago. B-)

Cue Card looks a banker but I’ve got Taquin Du Seuil pencilled down as an each way chance, think Djakadam had a tough race and Don Poli more suited to Cheltenham than Aintree for me , any thoughts on him Gord?
Oh and Grimes was asking questions about Ante Post bets in the lounge under the thread about NED’s, whatever that is. I think he meant to say Gord but wrote God. I said I’ll pass the message on.

Brave as ever, Gord, including GLV with that low fencing trajectory.

    Good luck

    You’ll need it!

My tactic with Aintree when I’m unsure is to go for a horse that was fancied at Cheltenham but who disappointed. I would regard Don Poli as having disappointed, I don’t think he should have been ridden the way he was and I think they may learn from that. I understand that the track is not the best for him but he did win over course and distance earlier in the season. Cue card is the best horse but has had a long season and had a bad fall the last day, so I think at those odds I wouldn’t see any value. Djakadam has had his race in my opinion and had a hard race in the gold cup. So out of the big three I think Don Poli by virtue of having an easy race at Cheltenham

I agree with most of that TWM.

Everyone wants Cue Card to win – including me – but he’s very short considering what happened last time.
Cue Card would probably have beaten Djakadam at Cheltenham, and there is the possibility of Djakadam having a hard race, but imo there’s just as much chance of Cue Card losing some confidence in his jumping. CC should certainly be favourite, but the gap between the two is too wide.

I have Cue Card as a fair 7/4 shot (36.5%) in my 100% book, Djakadam as 2/1 (33.5%) with Don Poli as the best value of the lot @ 9/2 18%. Another one Gord might have heard of I make an overpriced outsider – Taquin Du Something.

Don Poli was given an awful ride in the Gold Cup, it seemed Davy thought he was on one with very doubtful stamina. If they’ve got any sense will ride the horse much more prominently. I’d like to see an attacking ride… And if he is outpaced, don’t just sit motionless! Use your hands!

I was looking for one to pick up the pieces if they get racing too far out. Taquin fits the bill. It’s early days, but Jonjo seems in better form at last, so TDS could improve from Chelters. I know the other three will need to under-perform but that’s possible. Wakanda shouldn’t be good enough, spat the dummy out when couldn’t lead last time. Unless Houblon goes on – Waka may well get to the front this time. Had to have a minute saver.

Thought about just laying Cue Card, but want to be against the others too.
Dynaste is sadly on the decline, Saphir is a dodgepot these days and Irish Cavalier flattered last time.

Taken the 6/1 Don Poli and 43/1 Taquin with two savers on Djakadam 5/2 and Wakanda 79/1

I think Cue Card at his best is at least 7lbs better than these. The big problem is will he show it today.

All of a sudden he looked a dodgy jumper at Cheltenham. I thought the fall and subsequent fallout was something of a smokescreen for a pretty poor round of jumping. I backed him and thought at the time he was an accident waiting to happen. There must have been a reason for the poor jumping. My guess is that reason was Paddy Brennan. There is more pressure as a relatively short priced favourite and generally I would say that Aintree offers a sterner jumping test than Cheltenham.

I would like to see him win but wouldn’t put money on it. Hopefully, the King George will not prove to be his swan song. With doubts about the front three I have had a small bet on Saphir Du Rheu in the hope that he might be able to recapture his novice form. The course will almost certainly suit him better than Cheltenham as it puts less emphasis on stamina. Ground any worse than soft would be a negative.

With the ground against Irish Cavalier, I don’t think the outsiders are good enough.

Hoping Cue card wins so he goes to Punchestown and we can get a showdown between himself and Don Cossack.

Fully expect him to beat Don Poli or Don slowly as he’s widely known these days but an onsong Djakadam could cause him a lot of problems and i think Taquin De Seuil was out paced in the Ryanair and could run a nice race here for a place.

I did Djakadam for this after much consideration.

I had him in the Gold Cup ante-post at 16/1 and on the day I felt he travelled sweetly in behind.

Once Don Cossack got to him it was clear that the Elliot horse had more pace and Djakadam couldn’t keep tabs. Cue Card was making good headway but I felt the jockey panicked and was culpable in the Tizzard horse’s fall.

Last year Djakadam was beaten at Punchestown and that was initially blamed on the Gold Cup taking it out of him. However, it was Don Cossack who pulled the surprise that day and in retrospect there was no disgrace.

I feel Djakadam is going to be better suited by today’s ground than Cue Card and we have just seen Apples Jade comprehensively turn around the Cheltenham form with Ivanovich Gorbatov on the different going.

No doubt Don Poli fans will feel the stamina test will help him but I still have palpitations regarding him becoming outpaced and ridden along. He came past horses who had run their race in the Gold Cup and would have been 4th had Cue Card stood up.

Djakadam at 3/1 looked the call on this surface and I took Buveur Dair in tomorrow’s race against Limini as two singles and a double as my main bet of this meeting. I feel Limini is poor value in this more competitive affair than the Cheltenham Mares race.

I’ll be disappointed if both lose.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Cue Card was wonderful, and paid a massive compliment to ‘The Don of the Division’ Don Cossack ;-)

This guy is a machine. All he does is work out and pick winners. Talk about fit. You should see him without his shirt off, serious side of beef.

So easy for Cue Card there. Djakadam stopped to nothing in about two strides today. He looks one to avoid for me now and the excuses are worn out for him.

Don Poli plugged on but he seems to race in snatches.

You have to feel for Cue Card in the Gold Cup after that show today, he outclassed them here and stayed on as well as you could ask. Maybe he’ll lift that Gold Cup yet! :good:

What can you say, other than OUTSTANDING !!!!

So pleased for the connections, and all the TRF’s who didn’t lose
the faith in him. Well done guys, I hope you’ve got some money back off
him to make up for the Cheltenham disaster.

Absolutely delighted for the horse and connections,, been a real favourite of mine since his first bumper win then hacking up at 40s in Champion Bumper. Was absolutely gutted for it, te most ive ever been for a horse – and have been since Cheltenham(and not just the four figures £ it costs me) when it fell at Cheltenham when I knew having seen horse run time and time again, it was just getting interested and had plenty left.

It would have won the Gold Cup ill say it till the day they are putting me 6 feet under, it is a new horse this year, finds plenty, stays well.

Afraid next year might just be a little far for it as an 11 years old, I hope it gets there in the same form and see if he can win one, but I think the stable might have a lurker waiting to go chasing that might surpass even him in ability stakes.

Vautour/ Cue Cuard / Thistle Crack / Coneygree / Don Cossack all to get there in tip top form next year please.

At least this division is healthy.

No disrespect to Annie Power but those were a right bunch of donkey’s she was taking on. The No One down, My Tent Or Yours (Formerly named Cheap Metal Detector because he finds nothing) and Nichols Canyon looking like he must have run up the weakest set of Grade 1’s in history and if he’s truly rated 162 then it must be a fahrenheit figure rather than celcius.

    Creaks, crocks and cuddies.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
