Well done winners and just a small fun fact: Dan Skelton had three horses in the first six. All of them a decent prices. Let’s see what he’ll have lined up for the County.
February 10, 2024 at 16:08 #1680719Big well done for Heidi Palin for getting Favoir home in fifth that must have been some experience.
The things I want most in life are the things that I can't win.
February 10, 2024 at 16:21 #1680720Good Cheltenham prep for Favoir.
Value Is EverythingFebruary 10, 2024 at 16:45 #1680724Having seen Heidi tearing round Maisemore Park on Azzuri I’m not in the least bit surprised.

February 10, 2024 at 16:48 #1680726Agreed, GAG, she won Hunters’ Chases at Hereford and Fakenham on Bennys King last season.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"February 10, 2024 at 18:25 #1680745I wonder how many of the choices mentioned above might have been different if we’d been given an accurate going description?
Winners time 3m 55s, a time that would be impossible on heavy ground and hard to believe on genuine soft ground. Apart from the first race, where they crawled round as if they believed the going report, all the race times indicate the ground was good to soft with maybe some soft patches.
Not the first time the recently appointed clerk of the course has over-reacted to rain.
February 10, 2024 at 18:31 #1680748Interesting you should say that, I never looked at the times but was watching the first race thinking hmm the ground doesn’t look that deep, it looks quite nicely actually and later on watching more races thinking hang on, why are these horses not finishing legless if it’s meant to be heavy. I was going to back Norman Fletcher due to his effort in an Aintree bog, but when I saw the ground in the first race I decided not to bother.
February 10, 2024 at 18:52 #1680752Agree AP. I backed Altobelli because I thought he would be suited by the ground (winning form on heavy and soft).
He ran moderately today. I don’t like making excuses for beaten horses but if the ground was genuinely good to soft, it would not have been in his favour and I doubt I would have backed him.
February 10, 2024 at 21:27 #1680772I would have deffo backed every winner on the card if I’d known that about the ground! And probably most of the card at Naas and even some of the winners at Exeter tomorrow as well!
February 10, 2024 at 22:11 #1680776Maybe I should be the one to say / ask this as I did not have a bet today; not influenced by pocket.
Do punters deserve an apology from the Newbury Clerk?
tbh Getting going assessments right isn’t easy. I do expect them to sometimes get it one out, saying “heavy” when it’s actually “soft”. That’s understandable.
But to get a going description this wrong seems bordering on incompetence, if not worse.
Did the Clerk just not want to go out in the rain?In fact, should there actually be an inquiry into this?
A going report this wrong can manipulate betting markets to such a degree it could be used for foul play. Don’t get me wrong, am not saying there was any skulduggery involved here – the Clerk has probably just got it extremely wrong. Am just asking whether there should be an inquiry to find out?Otherwise… What is to stop a Clerk putting up a deliberately false going report, in order for those in the know to profit?
Value Is EverythingFebruary 10, 2024 at 22:17 #1680777Anyone who had backed a Heavy-ground specialist for the “Schweppes” pretty much knew their fate when Emitom was only 15.45s slow for 3m (0.65s per furlong) in the 1.30.
I’d say that indicates Good to Soft ground.
Similar story on the Chase course with Shishkin 12s slow for 2m7f110yds and Edwardstone 8.4s slow for 2m110yds.
Even allowing for the lofty OR of these quality chasers and the weights carried, these are not Heavy-ground clockings.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"February 10, 2024 at 23:27 #1680785I had a punt on Emitom in the 1.30 and watching the race i thought “this ground is nowhere near heavy”.
You could see there was “soft” in it, but it certainly didnt look particularly bad.
Then in the Denman i had Sam Brown, bet early morn because i knew he’d love it heavy, but he was run off his feet early doors.
Poor from the course imho.February 11, 2024 at 00:09 #1680790Hats off to the Favoir backers, I got it totally wrong thinking this would be a midfield run, then dropped a few pounds for Cheltenham. Let’s keep it simple and just back all of Skeltons in the County.
