Not the best of results for punters. The favourite found absolutely nothing under pressure and the two fancied Hobbs ran abysmally and that is probably being kind. Sternrubin looked about the least ‘brave’ horse in training as he capitulated in strides once headed and War Sound added to his already inconsistent profile. Perhaps he only runs garbage when I back him. I will need to have suffered a similar knock on the head to his trainer when he made the Champion Hurdle entry if I even consider backing him again.
As for the winner he was very impressive granted an easy lead at Aintree. So much so I backed him against the shorties in the Tolworth. I know he was beaten by a couple of decent sorts but to my eyes he was pretty disappointing, dropping away tamely in the straight and never entertaining any hope of creating an upset. He didn’t look that happy being taken on for the lead either. All in all too many negatives to get excited about a much stiffer assignment where he couldn’t possibly get an easy lead. I think Sandown performance and today were chalk and cheese and perhaps in hindsight a left handed, flat track is his ideal.
February 13, 2016 at 22:43 #1233562Trainer stated in an interview afterwards that he is not even entered at Cheltenham and he twice made a specific point that soft ground was a must for the horse – not sure what options he would have at Aintree where the ground is invariably better than at Cheltenham, if the current weather continues maybe the Imperial Cup at Sandown would be an option together with a trip to the Punchestown festival that usually has soft ground.
February 14, 2016 at 00:24 #1233569I’ve backed a decent winner at last! Seems like an age I’ve waited….very impressive performance though, so well chuffed with the 25/1…
February 14, 2016 at 00:44 #1233572Well dug out Zam, a 25/1 winner out of a race like the Betfair
is some pick
February 14, 2016 at 01:16 #1233576Have had a few quid on the fav as totally unexposed and could be anything…my other play is a small each way on Agrapart at 25’s…won easy as ya like time before last and wasn’t disgraced behind Yorkhill last time doing the donkey work…
Well done, Zam. Fine ride by young Kelly, too. She doesn’t lack confidence.
February 14, 2016 at 01:21 #1233577War Sound was disappointing and it looks like Sternrubin has had enough of racing for now. He had a brutally tough race last time, which might have left a permanent mark on this young horse.
February 15, 2016 at 00:39 #1233718Perhaps he’s just done all he can over hurdles off his mark? Dickie J said he was bought to be a 3m chaser
February 15, 2016 at 12:21 #1233749One of my Fav races but didn’t get either selection in first 5
