Jean Boht played the mother in Bread and, in my time at the BBC, she was comfortably the most God-awful, “luvvie,” actor I encountered there.

Infinitely better-known people – like Des Lynam, Len Martin and Moira Stuart – were absolutely lovely, but Boht was so up her own backside it was unbelievable.

Des Lynam was in the Royal Box on Centre Court yesterday.

Blimey, the years have not been kind to him. I would not have recognised him if Sue Barker had not said who it was.

Still Game is currently on Netflix worth binge watching if you have it. My favourite sitcom though has to be Yes Minster and Yes Prime Minister. A product of the eighties but still true today and in my opinion still funny. Also Porridge and Open All Hours are worth a mention.

    Eliminate the negative.
    Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.

“Blimey, the years have not been kind to him.”

He was barely recognisable to me from the dapper, slightly raffish, charming chap I remembered, who would turn up in jeans and an old pullover at the studio for Grandstand mere minutes before the opening music, amble out of the dressing room, still doing up his tie, literally seconds before he was live on air, then sit down and casually say: “Good afternoon” to millions as if he’d been sat there hours.

I found it a bit sad, tbh – that’s time for you, I guess.

    It was Des alright
A bit worn around the edges
    But he looked relaxed
and no doubt the clock has waved it’s big hand at him.
If he wasn’t wearing a beard
    I’ve made a big mistake.
    People out of the limelight
can take on a different shape….

Now Patrick McGinty, an Irishman of note
Fell in for a fortune, and he bought himself a goat
Says he, “Sure of goat’s milk I’m going to have me fill!”
But when he bought a nanny home, he found it was a Bill…

Jean Boht didn’t seem to think her later married name of Davies (through composer Carl Davies) was one to conjure with Ian. I hope that didn’t jaundice your opinion of her.

Unfathomably popular, I loathed Bread and found the casting ghastly across the board.

Des Lynam took part in The Tracks of My Years on R2 a few years ago. His voice seemed to have gone to a strangulated upper register. His music selections all went a fair way back, Chris Farlowe and Long John Baldry probably the most modern. He’s nearing 80 and I hope he’s in reasonable fettle.

I quite liked Bread, but not after they changed the actor playing Joey. However it was a patch on Liver Birds.

Nathan I absolutely love Inside Number 9. I would have described it as a dark comedy rather than a sitcom. But in series 7 it’s just dark.

Every series is on the iplayer.

A couple of lesser known ones from the 80s, which I loved, were Dear John (BBC) and Absolutely (Channel 4).

Got the box sets of both.

One from the eighties that maybe no one remembers but it was quietly unique

Big Jim and the figaro club

A touch of the brilliant phoenix nights about it

Just watching again “Green Wing” on “All 4”.

    First episode ran from 2004.

It was filmed at Harrow and Basingstoke hospitals.

Probably my favourite of the 2000’s comedy programmes.

If you haven’t watched it already Nathan I’d recommend Psychoville. Also made by Shearsmitb and Pemberton it’s both very clever and funny.

Strangely enough I’ve never seen their first big hit, The League of Gentlemen.

As for other comedies my favourites would be Blackadder and Spaced.

I’ve not seen Psychoville but did watch all of The League of Gentleman
I even named one of my neighbours “The League of Gentleman” about 20 years ago and every one in the street and including my 16 year old son still does to this day

Was that a term of endearment?
