This is a poser; so mnay great horses who succumg to bad luck and injury, when they looked like setting up a sequence.
Dawn Run is the obvious choive; won it as novice in record time, also won a champion hrdle and beat the 2-mile champion ove fences. We’d probably only had a glimpse of her ability when she was sento France for all the wrong reasons.
Imperial Call seemed sure to dominate for years; ;he reminded me of Pendil, but he was never the same after a fall in Punchestown.
Looks Like Trouble, Kicking King, both injured, but the list is longDecember 25, 2009 at 22:32 #265504Tried to find Imperial Call on utube with no success; remember him being incredibly impressive that day.
December 25, 2009 at 23:08 #265510Mandarin or Mill House for me.
Mandarin for ever remembered for his epic Grand Steeple chase de Paris victory with a broken birdle and a bowed tendon in 1962.
Mill House lived for long in Arkle’s shadow, but as well as a Gold Cup, he won a Hennesey (the only time he beat Arkle), a King George, and a Whitbread.
These two often get forgotten when we talk of the all time great steeplechasers.
December 26, 2009 at 00:11 #265515A decade from now the answer will be clear as day…Denman.
December 26, 2009 at 06:16 #265522The Fellow deserves an honorable mention. Came awful close to a hatrick.

Erm… Desert Orchid, anyone?
December 26, 2009 at 14:45 #265576It’s between Prince Regent and Mill House.
The former’s Gold Cup tally was greatly reduced by the war, he must have won at least another 2 otherwise. Generally considered to be the best Irish chaser before Arkle.
Mill House was a quite outstanding horse, extremely unfortunate to be the same age as Arkle.
Denman may yet qualify, but let’s give him a chance first!

December 26, 2009 at 16:33 #265629Mill House !
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
December 27, 2009 at 19:51 #265932Desert Orchid for me. Was my favourite horse of all time, the one I can credit with hooking me on the game.
December 27, 2009 at 20:38 #265937I hadn’t ever though of Mill House as only winning one Gold Cup because of the fact that at almost any other time in history he would have won it several times. Dessie was probably lucky to have won one given that he ran so badly at Cheltenham most times. I have been wondering of late why it is that we went for so very long without having horses win it more than once and now it happens all the time. It’s probably a result of improved training techniques but seems to happen when you get a trainer who instinctively knows what is right for that particular horse. . I still think, however, that the best horse in the country wins the King George, but the best horse on the day wins the Gold Cup.
December 27, 2009 at 23:27 #265976The Thinker

in the bath !December 27, 2009 at 23:49 #265978Captain Christy and/or Mill House for me but Denman comes into teh reckoning too. Mind you, I’m not convinced that he’ll remain a one-time-winner.
Plenty have shown promise only to succumb to one thing or another. Durability is a key asset in any jumper but they are only as durable as an unlucky fall or bad step will allow.
December 28, 2009 at 00:03 #265980Got to be NORTON’S COIN won the race in record time, and had the odds on fave (Desert Orchid)four lengths back in third place.
100/1
March 30, 2010 at 13:29 #286496Kicking king what a clever jumper, i always thought he really looked at the fences and thought about it, could have been carrying a sack of spuds and he would have sailed it, i think could have gone on to great things.
March 30, 2010 at 16:41 #286522kicking king

March 30, 2010 at 17:09 #286534Since 1980, it can only be Desert orchid…surely? Denman comes into the equation, but two wins is not ruled out yet is it?
