Burroughill Lad or Desert Orchid surely.
Befair, your comment about Dawn Run being the “obvious one”. Your thread title is “best horse”. On what basis is Dawn Run the obvious one or best horse????

Good call Sir.
March 30, 2010 at 17:28 #286551Tried to find Imperial Call on utube with no success; remember him being incredibly impressive that day.
Try this link to highlights of 1996 – it’s right at the end……
March 30, 2010 at 17:33 #286553I just loved The Dikler…..

Until I started looking – I’d no idea how good his record was……
The 17-hand, blaze-faced The Dikler jumped the Cheltenham Gold Cup in seven consecutive years, placing third twice, second once, in a closely contested race, and winning in 1973. A crowd-pleaser whom no one wanted as a unbroken, ugly three year-old, The Dikler’s Gold Cup win was a thrilling race that proved his courage and staying power.
March 31, 2010 at 00:03 #286624Its definitely Desert Orchid
March 31, 2010 at 17:20 #286761The Fellow deserves an honorable mention. Came awful close to a hatrick.
Totally agreed with this, until the next message reminded he only won 1 too
March 31, 2010 at 22:03 #286824Got to be Dessie.
Got to be

So don't run, just like the others always do
March 31, 2010 at 23:31 #286836Dawn Run
Hammered Dessie over hurdles.
April 1, 2010 at 13:09 #286950After extensive research I’ve come up with Mill House.

Is this some sort of joke?
April 1, 2010 at 14:06 #286957Gotta be Dawn Run for me.

I went to Wikipedia to remind myself of which horses had won and saw "highly acclaimed chasers as Arkle, Golden Miller, Kauto Star and Mill House"
That pretty much points straight to Mill House who may or may not have been the best chaser only to win one but he was the unluckiest having run into Arkle.
Some would say Captain Christie though had Pendil not been brought down by High Ken I doubt if he’d have won one Gold Cup let alone 2 or more.
Having won a Champion Hurdle and a Gold Cup beating a previous winner in Forgive N Forget has got to put Dawn Run right up there.
Desert Orchid is without doubt the best horse to only win one but I would question if he could have won another one. His era was plagued with what I would regard as ordinary Gold Cup winners and Norton’s Coin made mincemeat of him the following year.
If the question is what horse could have won more Gold Cup’s but for an act of fate then I would swing towards Mill House, Jodami and Burroughill Lad.
The latter had it all. He jumped like Mill House and had the speed of Jodmai.
Burroughill Lad.

I think that is open to plenty of doubt. Pendil was considered to be in his element around Kempton and a doubtful stayer at Cheltenham. Had he been ridden differently he may have beaten The Dikler but it wouldn’t have been that easy and The Dikler wouldn’t have had the class of Captain Christy.
April 3, 2010 at 18:03 #287341Why has no-one mentioned The Dikler yet? Admittedly I am biased towards him, but he had a very impressive record in several King George’s, won a Whitbread, twice ran well in the National etc etc, first horse to have defeated Pendil, could run 2m or 4m4f, and impressive looking.
