I wouldn’t be Des Scahill’s biggest fan, but he excelled himself this day; way better than Peter O’Sullivan. Its the closing stages of the 1986 Gold Cup,just to whet your appetite for next week.
March 8, 2012 at 20:33 #395431March 8, 2012 at 23:31 #395463Personally it is Richard Hoiles, Gold Cup 2008.

Personally, I think Holt was even better in the Tingle Creek that season. "Gerraghty looks around
again
! Almost with
nonchalance
this time!"
The astonishment in his voice gives me goosebumps. Can only find Mark Johnson’s version on YouTube, though.
March 9, 2012 at 08:14 #395477Sadly, my favourite bit of commentary from this season (Simon Holt, Betfair Chase, Haydock Park), has been taken off YouTube by those miserable sods at RUK.
Everybody, all together now ‘…And Kauto Star is STILL THE KING!!!’

March 9, 2012 at 10:34 #395500ARRRRR! Brilliant.
If you get the chance to listen to Ian Bartlett’s (I think) commentary on last year’s amazing King George, he does make it sound less interesting than a selling hurdle at Catterick which took some doing.
My all-time favourite is Des again, getting his knickers in a twist over Quantativeeasing. I know I’ve put this up before, so apologies but it is very, very funny…

March 9, 2012 at 11:58 #395511Simon Holt again for Best Mate – THREE GOLD CUPS!!!
Also Graham Goode on two commentaries for the much-missed Whitbread Gold Cup "THREE WAY FINISH TO THE WHITBREAD" and Desert Orchid’s victory "The roof is being raised at Sandown"
Graham Goode’s call for Desert Orchid’s final King George chase win at Kempton was also special I think.
PS Here’s hoping this time next week Simon Holt is cheering on Kauto Star to victory again, hope that would match his call at Haydock.
March 9, 2012 at 12:20 #395513Its probably an age thing but I find the modern crop of UK commentators intensely irritating, keener to insert "clever" puns than to call a race accurately with an air of excitement. I think Simon Holt has reached that stage Graham Goode did when he sounds like he is going through the motions, and would be well advised to move aside. I also found his calling of Best Mates second Gold Cup strange – from "travelling like the good horse he is" – understatment or what – to "this beautiful horse" – the sort of comment you would expect from a maiden aunt not a serious racing commentator.
I don’t think Sir Peter O’Sullevan has ever been properly replaced, and for me his commentary of the 1989 Gold Cup takes some beating.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcCuIVn6egMI also think Trevor Denman is top class and his Zenyatta commentary in the 2009 BC Classic was spine tingling:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ud_XPH6Eix4March 9, 2012 at 12:30 #395516Michael O’Hehir (sp?) during Foinavon’s National is one of my favourites. Great professionalism in hardly missing a beat when confronted with a bizarre situation. And I love that pause once it’s all started to sink in : "They’re going down to the Canal Turn…er, well the one that’s going down to the Canal Turn happens to be Foinavon!"
Great stuff.
March 9, 2012 at 12:34 #395519Peter O’Sullevan on Red Rum’s 1977 National, superb stuff when he took it up at the 2nd last.
His words fitted in perfectly with what was happening after the last with no concocted commentary devised prior to the race, like some commentators resort to these days if they think something special might happen and thankfully no puns.March 9, 2012 at 14:14 #395537Old Applejack has beaten me to it.
Yes, the late Micheal O’Hehir’s commentary of the never to be forgotten 1967 ( what a year that was ! ) Grand National. Remarkble for the pile-up and yet he still managed to pick out the horses during the melee at the Canal Turn.
I can still see the train sitting there in order to let the passengers see the race. Just wouldn’t happen now. Even the great Sir Peter O’Sullevan held Michael O’Hehir in the highest regard, both as a commentator and a friend.
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
March 9, 2012 at 16:05 #395555Yeah agree that Sir Peters comm in Red Rums last National was good "Its Hats Off" brilliant………..Really like Hoiles one on Denmans win in the GC too described his performance in 3 or 4 words coming up to the line……superb stuff a good comm most def helps a great moment in this sport……….well any sport really
March 9, 2012 at 16:35 #395558Peter O’Sullivan calling the last three fences in the ’89 Gold Cup sends shivers down my spine every time i watch it. It is simply amazing. "Desert Orchid’s accelerating as they come to the last!" and the stands come crumbling down.
My other favourite is from the 2003 Welsh Grand National. Watch from 5 out onwards. Jim McGraph really gets the blood pumping especially when the two leaders fall 4 out. Really, really exciting stuff.
Skip to 6:57 of… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJfNdmpZKqk
He also did a bloody fantastic job calling home Hedgehunter in the ’05 National. "Ruby Walsh is going strongly, he’s out in front on Hedgehunta!" Brilliant.
Oh, and another… When John Hanmer hands over to Jim in the 2001 National; Jim does a great job with what he’s given; 13 desperately slow moving horses. His call when they jump the chair still gets me every time…
"Oh Edmond’s gone, a shocking fall there and Moondigua’s gone! Moondigua’s gone, Listen Timmy’s made a remarkable recovery and Supreme Charm has gone! So three gone at the chair. As they go towards the water… Beau the top weight is out in front!" It’s… just…. genius.
He also calls Red Marauder home with so much passion and emotion. It’s… beautiful.
March 9, 2012 at 20:55 #395598That Dessie commentary as my parents took me to chelt to experience the gold cup as a 18 yr old – sheer courage on that bottomless ground my late mother (who insisted i came) who was an avid racing fan made sure i was there – I think she knew what a fantastic sport this is. Every time I watch that I have to fight back the tears from the emotion of that day
March 9, 2012 at 21:22 #395605I`m with Old Applejack on O`Hehir from the 1967 GN.
March 9, 2012 at 23:12 #395627Red Rum and O’Sullevan for me.
I’ve always wondered – do they pen a few iconic phrases just to have them ready?
What would be the phrases you’d have ready up your sleeve for next week?

This is a fun game to play…
Lord of Lords, King of Kings, Conquering Lion of Ditcheat, the greatest horse ever wins for the third time. (If Kauto wins)
With Long Run having gone for a Burton, the Gold Cup’s going to Burton Port (self explanatory).
He’s made this race his own, and they didn’t think he would! (If Alberta’s Run wins the Ryanair)
It’s one down, one to go for Kauto Relka’s little boys, and Cheltenham’s just got stoned (If Kauto Stone wins)
What? How did that happen? Can someone tell me how that actually happened? (If Big Buck’s doesn’t win).
Hmm…probably a good thing I’m not a commentator.
