Have to mention Brown Lad here; won the 2 + 1/2 mile novice hurdle (equivalent) in 1974, then went novice chasing winning the Reynoldstown by a distance. At that years festival the weather was so bad the first day was abandoned and the races were shoehorned into 2 days. Brown Lad won the stayers hurdle in an absolute canter, so easily they intended to run him again in the stayers novice chase the next day, which was to be run after the Gold Cup. But the weather was so atrociuos that the meeting was abandoned after the Gold Cup; in retrospect I’m quite sure he would have beaten Ten Up comfortably. It’s a shame no footage remains of his stayer’s hurdle win; had to be seen to be believed

“It’s hard to believe that the highest rating achieved by Cue Card (176) and Vautour (176) is only 4 pounds higher than the highest rating achieved by Santini (172) and 3 pounds higher than Lost in Translation (173)

    Its actually astonishing”

That is outrageous I totally agree.

It has to be Florida Pearl. Never ran in a single hurdle race, won the Festival Bumper and the RSA the year after. Overall a G1 winner in seven different seasons including a King George and a GC second to LLT, who was one of the most underrated dual Festival winners of the past 40 years or so.

Have to agree that Vautour and Cue Card should have won at least one GC.
