It’s the final leg of the USA Triple Crown at Belmont Park, Long Island, New York on Saturday.

The 1m4f contest was the one in which Secretariat delivering a truly astonishing display and, more recently American Pharoah completed his Triple Crown.

If a lot of horses Stateside struggle to stay 1m2f nowadays even more struggle to get 1m4f – it really is their St Leger.

All eyes will be on Forte, denied a run in the Kentucky Derby having stayed on dourly to beat subsequent Run For The Roses winner Mage on his previous outing.

I’d suggest strong-finishing Kentucky Derby third Angel Of Empire and Tapit Trice, only seventh but possibly capable of better than that, also merit attention.

Cracking race in prospect and I can’t wait.

Angel Of Empire ran an eye catching race at Churchill Downs. If I have a bet on this race it will be on him.

I couldn’t put you off him, CAS, he’s finished well over a searching 1m2f and Forte has yet to race beyond 1m1f.

Angel of Empire looks good to me as well. I don’t like that Forte’s training was interrupted, what with the lameness business he had to deal with that kept him out of the Derby. Arcangelo is my sentimental favorite, his trainer Jena Antonucci is the polar opposite of Pletcher and Baffert and the kind of person we need in American racing.

The more interesting race to me from a handicapping standpoint is the Friday co-feature, the 2-mile G2 Belmont Gold Cup. Half the field is hurdlers prepping for Saratoga’s big races, though several of these have top-class flat form as well. Joseph O’Brien has a runner in, High Definition, who’s recently been sold to go jumping in the US. Then there’s the Godolphin horse Siskany who will likely be an odds-on favorite. And Tartini, the 9yo with a star-studded staying pedigree (he’s a 1/2 brother to Lucarno, Flying Officer, Thought Worthy, etc) who won a 15-furlong race last out…at Turf Paradise in Arizona.

Backed Angel of Empire at 7/2.

Has all the redevelopment work at Belmont been completed now? Or are we going to have another season of “Belmont at the Big A” in the autumn?

There is an issue with air quality in New York at the moment, which has caused some sporting events to be abandoned.

Belmont was not affected today and seems confident it will be OK for Saturday:

Forte (2/1), Tapit Trice (4/1), Angel Of Empire (7/2) – I absolutely cannot see beyond this trio (I can’t have Preakness winner National Treasure for various reasons) and I make it about 1/3 aggregated one of this trio prevails.

Three hob nobs to win one will provide three minutes of entertainment circa midnight Saturday night.

Racing at Belmont is cancelled today but there appears to be optimism about Saturday:

Saturday’s supporting card is also tremendous, so I very much hope the meeting is saved.

What on Earth is going on with the New York stakes this evening?
Charlie Appleby’s ‘With The Moonlight’ has been down as a non runner on the Racing Post since yesterday morning but it’s still in all the markets I can see.

I want to back Didia but if WTM is out then rule 4 comes into it.
That’s if racing goes ahead of course.

I admit to being a pessimist but after watching the news last night, I will be surprised if the meeting goes ahead. It looks awful in New York.

I think Long Island is, as the name implies, quite coastal – maybe that gives it a chance?

Belmont Park is the only American track I have attended. It is just outside the city but not really that far away. The train journey takes about half an hour.

Let’s hope it is OK but the cancellation of Thursday’s card has to be a concern.

Racing scheduled today so that will give a key indicator, I guess.

Racing goes ahead. Still no move on the market re With The Moonlight.
It’s either amateur hour with the bookies or the Racing Post.

Edit: Fixed now, WTM non runner. Have plumped for Didia in the New York Stakes 941pm at 5/1, hoping the fav gets tapped for speed over shorter than she has regularly plied her trade.

Yeah there was some rain that helped move the smog out (for now, anyway) so it’s not too bad there.

The late English Channel is so dominant as a sire in American turf racing. Besides favorite War Like Goddess in the New York Stakes, he has 5 runners (from 7 non-Europeans) in the Belmont Gold Cup. Him, More Than Ready, Kitten’s Joy, all dead with no obvious heirs apart from the now 19yo (!) Hard Spun.
