During this cold snap, even though AW racing might survive, I think I’d be very wary of having a bet simply because it’s difficult to know how much work some trainers are able to get into their horses. Even those with AW gallops may be having difficulty in producing a normal surface. I’m only touting this in the hope that no-one loses big time.

I just wish Wolverhampton would get an AW meeting aswell for this Saturday as yet again it is Lingfield and Kempton.

So Londoners have a choice of two meetings yet anybody else from the rest of the country get bugger all.

Im not a huge AW fan but they do have a loyal collective fanbase in the sameway that NH racing does and i would have gone to Wolves if they were given a Sat meeting instead of letting Kempton switch to AW even though they do have the ability to do so.

Northern Racegoers aching for some live action would have made the trip but sadly we get ignored.

Rip off the crap at southwell and put in a poly track, flood lights and some decent falicites. With its proximity too the east coast mainline you could see hoards of people once these improvements are in place.

Are these the same hordes of people who go to the floodlit, Polytrack venues at Wolverhampton, Great Leighs and Kempton?

    You’re a bit misguided, aren’t you?

Please correct me if I’m mistaken, but as my thread BE WARY was about the inclement weather for training purposes, it seems that I should have been more wary of my post being hijacked. Alternatively, someone might wish to discuss the possibility of opening a racecourse where the horses run on ice – is there not such a venue abroad somehere?

It happens Ken!…. sometimes with great results too.

Personally, I was waiting for a few of those in the know to tell me what trainers the cold snap is likely to affect most…..it may still happen!

Was that the intended question? albeit in disguise?

To be truthful, I don’t really mind how people respond to my threads. It’s just nice to get any discussion going. You afford me too much rationale to suggest I was covertly seeking inside info. but it’s a good idea because I’m sure some trainers must be finding it impossible to even walk their horses out of the yard. Have you noticed how many more horses are being turned out quickly again of late? Is the first run a training exercise and the second for real, I ask myself?

It got to minus 12 at the top of Warren Hill around 6.30am on Tuesday morning but the all-weather gallops in Newmarket seem to be still working well.

I’d suspect that the Newmarket trainers won’t be disadvantaged by this cold spell.

Arosa and St Moritz both run on snow (the former has even been known to hold hurdles races on it), but I think ice might be another matter altogether.

I would hate them to rip up the fibresand at Southwell. Its good to have the two surfaces and gives an alternative for soft ground horses. What does annoy me is that they still call the going standard on the polytrack when even that gets slower in extreme temperatures.
But in general I am a big fan of AW racing even though I have not been as successful this winter as usual. I think the general standard of race and horses is rising and most of the top trainers at some point during the year use it. Makes me laugh when people slag it off but will bet at places like Brighton, Folkestone and Catterick which themselves tend to only stage very low grade racing with poor horses, except the pace tends to be slower and the surface less uniform.

I cannot get some of the extreme "anti" views you get when it comes to AW on these forums.

If you dont like AW racing dont watch it, nobody is forcing you. Just because the attendances are not always very high, why does that matter when part of their purpose and the reason they were invented was to give the punters up and down the country a betting medium during the winter months when the tuff is frozen. I think there is snobbery in some quarters regarding this matter. Shall we ban afternoon greyhound racing just because they haven’t got 5,000 chinless wonders streaming through the gates every afternoon?

Some would say banning Banded racing and BAGS greyhound fixtures would be a major step forward (not me you understand), since the only real choice they give punters is whether they go broke in twenty minutes or an hour. Let’s not bring punter choice forward as an argument in favour of high overround betting shop fodder. The bottom line is that both low grade dog racing and aw banded fare (is there a difference, some might ask) are equally iniquitous.

For the record, this is not an anti all weather tirade, and I’m a fan of Southwell as a rule. It’s a "don’t bury your head in the sand" post.

Hear hear – it gives connections of soft ground lovers a chance to win some money which would otherwise only be available through the turf season.

If a cliche is repeated often enough, does it make it fact? This soft ground horses go on fibresand is complete tosh isn’t it? Although having said that, I’ve read Mapletoft’s spotlights and he likes the theory so perhaps it does have merit.
