If Usain Bolt doesn’t win the overseas personality award, I’ll eat my gold sandshoes.

Who decides the Overseas award – is it the BBC themselves or the public vote?
August 24, 2008 at 12:09 #177964It’s the ‘Panel’ Corm.
The only award that gets voted for by the public is the main award, all other awards are decided by the panel (whoever they are).

August 24, 2008 at 15:03 #177983Although this may seem contrary to what I said earlier in the thread, I think Bolt will win the overseas personality (that doesn’t necessarily mean that I believe he should). He’s really captured the public imagination, more than the admirably humble Phelps.
As for the main award, if you assume it’s a two horse race, bear in mind which of the two will have their fizzog on the gogglebox more often between now and December. That would make Adlington a sure thing IMO.
August 24, 2008 at 19:26 #178015I think Becky Adlington is nailed on for this one.
At least it will be won by someone who has achieved something this year.
Laura Robson will win Young Sports Personality easily
August 24, 2008 at 19:43 #178021At least it will be won by someone who has achieved something this year.
Agree here. Calzaghe won it because Hatton failed the night before.
All in all the UK didnt win much last year…..same for the year before when Zara Phillips won it out of the blue!
Does nobody else think that Andy Murray could win this is he has a superb US Open?
Dont forget the Ryder Cup’s still to come this year too! Albeit that wont have much of an effect on the SP 2008
August 24, 2008 at 22:59 #178054I think Becky Adlington is nailed on for this one.
"The best thing about Becky Adlington is that she’s so normal – she doesn’t act like an Olympic athlete, more like someone who works at Greggs".

August 25, 2008 at 10:40 #178107Perhaps the secret to her success is really the odd steak bake or a daily fudge dougnut.

No
Cos hes a miserable, chronically ugly, scottish billynomates

Can’t see it personally. I’m of the opinion that Murray winning Wimbledon would be the ultimate SPotY trump card, but in an Olympic year (especially this one!), I doubt any other slam would be good enough.
August 26, 2008 at 13:35 #178227Agreed.
I suspect Lewis Hamilton might not win for precisely the same reason, even if ultimately claiming the World Championship this year.

August 26, 2008 at 15:17 #178253Lewis Hamilton will get the same number of votes year in year out
Have tended to notice that many f1 followers have zero interest or knowledge of other sports too. Or should i say, zero interest in sport full stop
F1 is a "sport" that people either love or hate (bit like racing maybe)
He could every GP by 5 miles (or whatever) and i would still rather put my hand down an unflushed toilet than vote for him.
More or less an opinion i have found that many share….
August 26, 2008 at 17:20 #178265Don’t underestimate the fact that the most recent events tend to get higher votes – as memories and hype surrounding the Olympics fade and if Hamilton wins the F1 championship in, say, a thrilling finale, with the strongly loyal vote of the petrolheads he could well outmanouevre Adlington on the final chicane.
September 9, 2008 at 12:14 #180165Eleanor Simmonds – that’s what I call a personality. Her winning smile should alone be enough to win SPOTY.
November 6, 2008 at 04:20 #188245Lewis is 4/7 to win

Chris Hoy 6-1….Tasty
