Any thoughts on this one?
I backed Lewis Hamilton in early 2007 for that year only to be cruelly denied by Calzaghe.
He’s a short priced fav. again this year and if he wins the F1 Championship would be long odds-on for this, but being an Olympic year maybe someone will stand out and snatch it away.I quite like cyclist Mark Cavendish’s chances at around 16/1 on BF. He’s already won a British best 4 stages of the Tour de France and is widely recognised as the best sprinter around at the moment. He surely will have the chance to win a gold or two at the olympics and Sky’s sponsorship of the team will keep his face on the TV should he continue winn
Any other thoughts?
July 27, 2008 at 15:33 #175030The Young Sports Personality will be nip and tuck between Tom Daley and Laura Robson depending on how Tom does in the diving.
As for the main event Lewis will be long odds on id imagine but it all depends on what happens in Beijing.
Team should go to Manchester Utd for doing the treble but if Lewis wins the F1 then McClaren should make it an interesting duel.
July 27, 2008 at 16:45 #175035I’m surprised that anyone still takes an interest in this discredited farce which seems to have outrun its sell-by date by about two decades.

July 28, 2008 at 10:59 #175099Lewis Hamilton, should he win the formula one title, will probably win the award.
I backed him last year, but Calzaghe’s on line supporters nipped enough ears to swing it his way.
There have been some strange choices over the years; none more so than Zara Phillips. That was the pits, in my opinion.

A good value bet is just that.
If I could have got 1/1 about Robert Mugabe still being Zimbabwe Pres. after the "election" I’d have taken it
Agree that the SPotY is shite, though!
July 28, 2008 at 13:10 #175111I would think one or two contenders may come out of the olympics. Perhaps, from one of the more unfashionable sports – Badmington, Table Tennis, Cycling, Canoeing, certainly Murray if he wins Gold in the Tennis etc
.Might be worth keeping an eye out for any early indication of any ‘Talking Horses’ with TV and Press support that go on to win, or as we all love a loser, fail bravely.
July 28, 2008 at 17:22 #175130Don’t think Joey Barton will figure too prominently!
August 16, 2008 at 10:11 #177125If this rather tacky little prog is to maintain a semblance of credibility then surely Rebecca Adlington must be 1.01
That rare thing: an underhyped Brit who over-achieves, rather than the usual overhyped Brit who under-achieves
Two Golds and the breaking of a nineteen year old world record…and it was live on the sports-thin BBC
August 16, 2008 at 11:17 #177129I agree Drone,
So surely that makes the 2.74 that is currently available extremely good value (at this stage). However, with possible multiple winners in the cycling I would be inclined not to have a bet at this stage. Not because I don’t think Rebecca will win, but because her price might get more tasty if someone like Bradley Wiggins or Chris Hoy do extremely well.
The Overseas market is shaping up magnificently. Padraig Harrington wins two majors and may well be part of a successful Ryder Cup team, Rafa Nadal wins everything and becomes world number one, Michael Phelps could win eight golds in one olympics – how the hell do you split them?
Mike
August 16, 2008 at 12:55 #177135In the immediate aftermath of her 400m gold, Becky Adlington was available at 19 on BF. I refuse to bet in public votes these days, but that was a real trading opportunity missed.

So you have a man who’s dominated in the absence of the world’s best player, a 21-year-old improving past a rival five or six years his senior and off his best, and the greatest Olympian ever (or he will be at least if he gets the eighth gold)? Admittedly that’s taking a very cynical view of Harrington and Nadal’s excellent achievements, which in isolation would win most years’ titles, but there are few years recorded by any sportsman that could match what Phelps looks poised to achieve IMO.
August 16, 2008 at 13:05 #177137Jesus that’s cynical!

August 17, 2008 at 15:22 #177215As I alluded to in the first post, it was hyperbolic cynicism. Harrington and Nadal have both had outstanding years which deserve infinite credit within their own sports, but the intended point was how can anything match up to what Phelps has done?

Quite so. I have to admit I watched it for the first time in many years last year, and it’s still as cringe-makingly embarrassing as ever. It needs to be put out of its misery.
August 24, 2008 at 02:27 #177912I think that Chris Hoy might just nick if from Adlington on the day.
Fickle memories of some of the general public will forget how good Adlington was to break that record. Hoy’s 4 gold medals from 2 games in 4 seperate cycling events is remarkable.
I dont think Chris Hoy could ever have been beaten and does he not bow out, if he chooses to retire, unbeaten in the last few years?
August 24, 2008 at 09:46 #177939I think the public have warmed to Adlington more than Hoy and., at the minute, she’d be my choice. You’re right Friggo though, 19 on betfair with one gold and her best event still to come could have been the year’s stand out bet. Unfortunately, like many I suppose, I never even thought about Sports Personality until after she’d won the second gold.
Phelps will surely win the overseas personality.
