"..plans to switch off its Ceefax racing pages at the end of the year……looking to save money, now regards racing as less than essential to its viewers…. four-man team already informed"
September 12, 2007 at 22:13 #114667Sad news, Wit.
Can someone remind me why we are compelled to pay a TV licence? I think I’ll scale back my payment in January too.
September 12, 2007 at 23:34 #114671Wow – what an amazingly interesting story this is
BBC to pull their coverage of Ceefax Racing. In a world where digital information is at the touch of the button are you really surprised?
BUT scaling back your payment of your TV licence because of this is a bit funny to be honest – are you really serious?
September 12, 2007 at 23:48 #114673"Wow – what an amazingly interesting story this is" What a childish comment.
Wit is one of the most interesting contributors to this forum. His posts are useful and a clear case quality over quantity. 380 odd posts in a couple of months from a newbie certainly shows the other side of the equation.

I don’t disagree,
But in a world of the ‘RED’ button, and in a world of the ‘INTERNET’, – to think of not paying the TV Licence because ‘Ceefax’ is to be removed is a bit comical don’t you think.
And just a quiet tip – I don’t care whether 380 posts from a newbie does show the other side of the balance – but the people opposed to me certainly show signs of immense jealousy.
Afterall, how many other ‘newbies’ have commanded so much interest?

Too true,
Isn’t ‘analogue’ being abolished anyway. And let me remind you that Ceefax is currently showing on ‘Analogue’.
Nest year, the Goverment is expecting everyone to be digital, and the BBC will have their own ‘text’ service’. So to be honest, losing out on Ceefax means you won’t lose out – what is the big deal or am I missing something serious?
Please enlighten me!
September 13, 2007 at 00:20 #114678Not in itself, Mikkymo. That would be just silly.
Let’s look at this little lot.
Radio 5 racing bulletins withdrawn.
The Irish Derby not shown in favour of show jumping..
The attempted cherry picking of Glorious Goodwood at the expense of the May and late August meetings.
Reduced Saturday coverage everywhere else.
No midweek coverage outside Royal AscotI’m a racing man. As such, and as a licence payer, I liked Ceefax.
And the Irish Derby on Sunday afternoon. And all the minor meetings the BBC once broadcast and recently axed because the great sport is not inclusive enough for the twenty-something urban metrosexuals who lurk in the ancient corridors at Shepherds Bush like some shallow bacillus.
And given a choice, I would generally avoid brain-melting shows involving cooking, lifestyle, light hearted sofa banter about West Bromwich Albion, the weather, posh cars, Jeremy Clarkson and posh cars, premiership football, Jamie Oliver, Jonathan Ross, traffic wardens, airports, ballroom dancing, politically-correct time lords, hospitals, doctors, doctors in Bristol hospitals, cop shows and I especially don’t want to watch soap operas involving cockney criminals and their interchangeable harem of carping bints.
Which leaves me pretty much bolloxed, really, as regards my ton-twenty.
Hope this clarifies my feelings on the matter.
September 13, 2007 at 00:24 #114679the guys they’ve dismissed aren’t operating analogue transmitters – they put together the sharpest and fastest racing news around.
but i understand.
you obviously prefer to leave that function to other providers and pay for it again, over and above the licence fee.
it must be something that us lesser minds can’t get our head around.

September 13, 2007 at 00:26 #114680Fair enough Max,
Spite yourself by withdrawing paying the BBC Licence simply because Ceefax has been withdrawn.
If you need some commentary on the BBC ‘only’ events then please don’t hesitate to give me a call – I am sure I could type it up for you in Ceefax style.

September 13, 2007 at 00:28 #114681You got connections with the Beeb, Mikky?
September 13, 2007 at 05:34 #114687I rely on text and ceefax as Virgin dont do red button or text also i bet when the live shows appear and bet at the last minute so not all of us can use digital. So the only live updated betting shows will be on ATR and Ruk.
September 13, 2007 at 06:23 #114688Shocking stuff, only goes to reinforce the BBC’s lack of commitment to racing in recent years. One of the reasons put forward for the dropping of the racing results and the racing bulletin was that this information was available elsewhere including Ceefax.
I would like to see meetings taken off them such as the National although can’t see this happening. The licence fee is money under false pretences to me, how many weeks wages for Ross etc would have paid for Ceefax racing for a year?
They may as well have advertising instead of all the countless annoying programme trailers between programmes.
I hate the BBC and what they have done with racingSeptember 13, 2007 at 07:04 #114691i don’t use it hardly at all now but i remember being grateful for it when i did. i guess market forces are to blame and that the beeb perceive that there is insufficient interest compared to what it costs. like when boxing and motor racing disappeared from beeb. maybe a an effort from the racing world or people who watch racing or use the service, aimed at the beeb to try to tell them they are wrong could make a difference, maybe not, but this thread alone won’t change a thing. if you’re gonna write, write to the beeb and the racing press, maybe those 4 people can be reprieved ?
September 13, 2007 at 07:24 #114696That’s quite sad .. I use the ceefax when I’m at home, the C4 text results are a joke, squeezed in between adverts for silly tipsters.
I suppose we are going to have to get used to it though, as racing will ultimately become less and less popular, due to greed and manipulation.
Btw, boxing became unpopular when it went onto sky and you had to pay for it. I remember, I was an avid fan. Greed ruined that sport too.
September 13, 2007 at 07:28 #114697I use to use Ceefax an awful lot in years gone by.
I had an analogue "Hauppauge TV card" installed in those days.
I use to place my bet and then stay glued to the screen and watch the text: – "Going Down" – "At The Post" – "Going Behind"
Brings back happy memories Wit.

Ceefax on the TV and a phone call is still the quickest and easiest way to bet if you’re stuck in a hotel room.
Also good for French racing of a Sunday.
Pity those who have never experienced waiting for the screen to turn over with 1st, 2nd, 3rd…….
best regards
