Ive never understood the bbc’s obsession with anything boaty, if someone goes on a solo boating trip its the top story on all the bulletins, the love anything to do with sailing, you watch the olympics next year they will have none stop coverage of yachting, rowing etc.
September 21, 2007 at 14:43 #115807Is the BBC ceefax service not provided by William Hill?
I was always amazed that a commercial name was on a BBC service but it was. Always imagined that it would have been a massive boon to Hills. The bookmakers used to spend very large sums indeed on their C4 text services and devote a lot of time and energy to them.
I wonder where the real cost of the service sat – ie with Hills or with the Beeb and who it is who is actually pulling the plug.
Surely the BBC were not previously paying Hills to produce this service which was a boon to all bookmakers of course but to none more so than Hills. Does anybody know?September 22, 2007 at 09:55 #115935Looks like the rot’s already started to set in, not one non runner or any early odds up yet.

Does anybody know?Sean please tell me who runs the atr text service i texted you during atr last week but you didnt reply, if you know the people that do can you ask them to get there fingers out and sort the service out.
September 23, 2007 at 09:32 #116066Apologies Steve for not getting back to you. I don’t know who runs it but I’ll find our what I can and get back to you. You’re not alone in being unhappy with the service from what I gather from e mails. I’m in tomorrow so I’ll see what I can find out then. Cheers
seanSeptember 23, 2007 at 09:57 #116070Nice one Sean, while he gets back to us perhaps everyone should say what they think is wrong with it, what they want to see on it then if the people who run it read this they can sort it out they way us user want it.
September 23, 2007 at 09:59 #116071Is it any wonder the BBC would eventually withdraw from supporting horse racing?
They were lambasted and derided whilst investigating undesirable activities within the sport, and have seen some of the culprits they exposed then continue to this day.Are you seriously suggesting this would cause the BBC to withdraw from covering racing?
September 23, 2007 at 10:43 #116079It would be very hypocritical of them to do so, after the news that the naming of the Blue Peter kitten was fixed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was only a suggestion but I was serious.
Panorama took a lot of flak with their first broadcast on corruption within racing. Reports indicate they might be doing another one soon.September 27, 2007 at 08:05 #116676This is the "official" reponse I have just received
Thank you for your e-mail.
I note your concerns regarding news that the Horse racing section of Ceefax is to be discontinued. The Head of Sport Interactive has released the
following:"The BBC has decided to scale back its coverage of horse racing on Ceefax from 2008. However we will continue to offer a results service and will provide extensive coverage of the Cheltenham Festival, Royal Ascot, Grand National and Derby meetings – plus reports on all the big races throughout the racing calendar. The decision also reflects changing audience behaviour, with more and more people using the internet and other digital devices to get their racing news, rather than relying on Ceefax as their only source of information."
Please be assured that we have registered your comments on our audience log. This is the internal report of audience feedback which we compile daily for all programme makers and commissioning executives within the BBC, and also their senior management. It ensures that your points, and all other comments we receive, are circulated and considered across the BBC.
Once again, thank you for taking the time to contact us.
Regards
Damian Whyte
BBC InformationSeptember 27, 2007 at 09:10 #116682TMWANG50, Who did you complain to? I would like to do the same thing, and I would hope a few others will too.
As for ATR text, it’s fine when it actually works, I used to find it would be on for a few days and then off for a few days, and it was a case of no matter what numbers you typed in, you were still looking at a blank screen.
I emailed Attheraces and was told it must be something to do with Sky tv.September 27, 2007 at 09:26 #116686September 27, 2007 at 09:27 #116687September 27, 2007 at 09:31 #116689Thanks, I’ve posted the story on FF too, so hopefully a few of them will complain too.
September 27, 2007 at 12:16 #116726I have emailed the complaints department and will let you all know what response i receive.
October 1, 2007 at 12:29 #117392I’ve received my reply and it’s the same as the one TMWANG50 got, but I still feel it was worth registering my complaint.
October 1, 2007 at 17:49 #117423I don’t have satellite tv or digital; all I have is this computer [no broadband either] and terrestrial telly. I’ve often ‘watched’ races on ceefax – I won’t have a betting account [too tempting] so if I do have a bet at the bookies and it’s not on telly [and the chances are these days that it won’t be] I rush home and ‘watch’ it on ceefax. Now the Breeders cup is no longer televised I watch that on ceefax, also the Melbourne Cup. although that is usually on the radio. Was annoyed when Luke Harvey was dropped from Radio 5 because we always listened to him when we were going racing. There is less and less of everything to do with racing on the television; I just wonder where it will all end.The first thing I do when I get home from work is put the ceefax news on followed by the racing. Feel a bit disgruntled!
