The coverage Saturday was fantastic.
In particular the piece on Hughes and Hanagan.
Why the BBC don’t do more days of racing like this I do not know, they have all the tools necessary, presenters, pundits, commentators, production team, but no, they would rather pay a fortune for some fast cars going around a track half way around the world at speeds too fast for their own good!

Aye, they have plenty of tools.

Is there extra race coverage from Longchamp on BBC’s red button today?
Last year there was some racing on the red button beforehand and it wasn’t advertised (as far as i know) then either
October 3, 2010 at 12:57 #3206351h25m on BBC2? There damned well better be interactive coverage

According to Willie crason Workforce beat Cape Blanco in the Derby!
Last year he was calling Fame and Glory "Flame and Glory" lol, I think he’s lost the plot.
October 3, 2010 at 14:12 #320661Suffice to say, Flamin’ Glory is one of my ‘potential horse names’.
And now we wait for the Stewards…
BlueSky @pghenn.bsky.social
So don't run, just like the others always do

October 3, 2010 at 18:54 #320752I think it was disgraceful today the BBC showed only fleeting coverage of the two British victories of Gilt Edge Girl in the Abbaye and Wootton Bassett in the Grand Criterium, what was the point in showing only the last furlong of these races?
October 3, 2010 at 20:26 #320769BBC the usual mix of the great, the good and the downright excrutiating.
Agree that the Hanagan/Hughes piece was good, I’m warming to Richard Hughes, he seems a more relaxed and at ease individual these days. Hanagan is a real gent, deserves every success. Soon, he’ll also have a house like Hughes’s!
Willie Carson was a great jockey and used to be a great interviewee when he was still riding but he’s no front man for a day like today. You can see Clare Balding visibly steady herself every time he speaks, fearful as she must be about what is going to come out next.
I appreciate it’s easy for me to say the next bit, sitting at home on a couch, but I didn’t think the race-call itself was top notch. Missed Workforce’s run until he’d hit the front. McGrath’s voice is the best in the business but he seems to miss a lot these days. None of them (the BBC team) seemed to notice Seraphima almost fall either.
On the other hand Balding continues to be superb and it was good to see/hear John Reid again.

I’d ask what was the point of the whole program? It was a pitiful excuse of an effort.
Almost an "Oh well. If weHAVE
to show the bloody thing, then …" type of broadcast.
It is sad how our sport is being degraded by the day, by the networks. It’s like they just can’t be too bothered to go the full mile for anything other than F1 nowadays.October 3, 2010 at 20:30 #320772Very disappointing that the BBC’s next coverage is Chepstow’s Welsh National meeting at Christmas.

The Beeb’s F1 coverage is amongst the very top of any sports coverage in this country (IMO) but it must be costing them a fortune.October 3, 2010 at 21:35 #320788I think that the Beeb’s attitude towards racing and other horse sports is summed up at the end of the golf highlights over the last couple of days.
Yesterday all the upcoming BBC sport for Sunday was mentioned, the Moto GP, The Rugby League Grand Final highlights (on after the Arc), Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony – didn’t think much of their coverage of that when I picked it up after the Arc- and also some documentary about why England don’t win the World Cup. Not a word of their coverage of the racing.
Today no mention of their daftly scheduled coverage of the World Equestrian Games three day event from 1pm to 2.15pm tomorrow afternoon. Especially since Britain has won the Team Gold Medal and William Fox-pitt the individual silver. Well done them and a strong racing connection as Mr Fox-Pitt is husband of Alice Plunkett of Channel 4 fame, Tina Cook’s maiden name is Gifford, daughter of Josh, sister of Nick and actively involved in the Findon yard, and Yogi Breisner maiestro trainer of the eventing team is also used by many jumping trainers to fix bad jumpers.
Thought the racing coverage was poor. Agree with Cormack on Jim McGrath. I am a rubbish race reader but even I spotted Workforce coming through. There was the inevitable interview with Frankie which had another unfair dig at Ryan Moore and his quietness. They don’t seem to be comfortable with his natural reticence and were reluctant to admit to the great ride he had given the winner as Sir Michael graciously pointed out.

The Beeb’s F1 coverage is amongst the very top of any sports coverage in this country (IMO) but it must be costing them a fortune. No doubt the latter. In this age of austerity, no doubt racing coverage will be even more degraded for cheaper options, as well as to subsidise their blanket F1 coverage.
The beauty of horse racing though, as opposed to F1, is that if Sir Michael Stoute has two separate jocks up on his two mounts in a race he doesn’t order his second string to finish behind his first string.
Also, the hard working jocks don’t retreat to their yacht in Monaco to celebrate with some blonde gold-digger after a win.
That is why F1 will always be laughable in comparison, for me. Horse racing has far more heart. F1 has none.October 3, 2010 at 22:22 #320796Also, the hard working jocks don’t retreat to their yacht in Monaco to celebrate with some blonde gold-digger after a win.
Ah, how little you know about Paul Hanagan.

Although I had to laugh at your comment about a trainer not ordering the jockey on one of his horses to finish behind the other. Because while that may be true, I don’t see Ferrari sending one of the cars to blast off in front with no petrol any time soon either.
And warming to a theme which is think is going to come up quite alot, Lewis Hamilton had a fine debut season, then won the Championship in his second & this year he’s back to try again. If that were horse racing, he wouldn’t be back; Ron Dennis would send him off to bed with that Pussycat Doll until he made some more champions.
