Can somebody please explain why if you are at home watching racing, bringing out some women in frocks and explaining why they are dressed nice will sustain the viewership? Idiots who run that place, its beyond a joke and makes no sense.
If Channel 4 and BBC actually decided to focus on the strengths of the racing, and show the sporting and athleticism aspect, rather than pandering to the middles classes and the casual fan, you might get a batter product, and better viewing figures.
Totally agree JJM, the powers at be have wrongly decreed that televised racing should cater to all tastes, even if you don’t like racing in the first place. I watch the BBC and Channel 4 because I’m a big racing fan and want to enjoy the sporting and athletic parts of the sport, I have no desire to see silly women sporting their daft hats and dresses.
June 4, 2010 at 15:47 #298604Give it up Willy. If you can’t even get the name of the top horses right you should hang up your box.

Did anyone find it annoying calling Fame and Glory, "FLAME" and glory, I must have counted at least 10 times it was said.
June 4, 2010 at 16:07 #298608I thought Willie said Flame once in error but then kept saying it…. d’oh
June 4, 2010 at 16:17 #298613As Willie might say, in the modern world everybody will have his fifteen minutes of flame.
Although being so small, perhaps Mr Carson wouldn’t burn for that long ……

June 4, 2010 at 16:49 #298618PPS. Is it me, or does Claire Balding look more like Pat Evans with every passing day?
I thought exactly the same thing today!! Surely she’s got better dress sense than that?
What about Willie Carson – haven’t seen him for ages, any improvement?
I was looking to see what her ear-rings were like. Fortunately she wasn’t wearing any, so she has a way to go yet.
Willie was his usual inept self, although he did call Pat (Oops, I mean Claire!) out on some racing stat ref. Khalid Abdulla gp1 winners on a disq.June 4, 2010 at 20:14 #298661McGrath not at his best again today. I have every respect for him but nowadays watch the racing in hope he won’t make any clangers. The Fiery Lad call was poor and I sense a lack of confidence which can only make things worse.
He’s a good journalist and now, perhaps, is the time to focus on that aspect.
Clare Balding holds the whole thing together. Without her you get the feeling that it would all simply collapse.
June 4, 2010 at 20:56 #298667I honestly think that without Clare Balding, the BBC sports department would fall apart totally. She’s like the BBC’s ‘go to girl’ with the racing, rugby, winter olympics & the rest.
I bet she could win a quiz on any sport you choose.
I wanted Ryan Moore to punch Persad today. ‘Does winning the Oaks feel good?’ I mean what the…!
June 4, 2010 at 22:30 #298681Precisely Anthonycutt. What would the reaction have been if he had said something like "actually, Richie, it was more fun winning a seller at Folkestone the other day, meant I did not have to answer such a silly question" Oh and pleased that Ryan Moore has won his first classic, the man is very good and I like his slightly droll sense of humour. Reminds me much of Lester in that respect.
I like Suzy Perry a lot, she does a great job on MotoGP and is certainly very knowledgeable on that grand sport. Shame the BBC don’t do the TT, she’d be good on that coverage. She is underrated as a presenter.
June 4, 2010 at 22:52 #298686If you haven’t already seen it, Bbob, Suzi quit the MotoGP gig at the start of the year, primarily due to the rigours of the travel involved. I think she’s also wanted to slow down and start a family for a while now, an opportunity cruelly dashed at the first time of asking when suffering an ectopic pregnancy just over a year ago.
Former local radio speedway / motocross broadcaster Jennie Gow now hosts the MotoGP coverage.
Incidentally, I’ve half an idea Suzi’s terms with the BBC may be just freelance rather than paid retainer, as she’s done
The Gadget Show
for Five for around six years now. None of which would preclude her from doing the TT, of course, especially as that’d constitute very little in the way for her of the travel she is now keener to limit.

June 5, 2010 at 00:41 #298691Why we have to put up with fashion rubbish I really don’t know – can’t wait for Royal Ascot and that pompous little git that really is deserving of one hell of a slap!!
I may be in a minority of one but I like Willie Carson. Yes he stumbles around a bit but he’s been there, done it and actually can speak a bit of sense he’s just not fluent at putting it across.
The pictures are fantastic if you look at RUK’s by comparrison there really isn’t any comparrison.
Aussie Jim I agree is shocking someone needs to be cruel to be kind and replace him.
Persad seems an affable, decent fella but he’s not very good to be honest he’s back on RUK now as well worryingly.

June 5, 2010 at 09:04 #298709The best way to call Claire Balding is ‘the ultimate safe pair of hands’.
Was gutted about that Ramona Chase as I had backed it, and was listening to the commentary, thought Big Jim had cursed me, and he had!
June 5, 2010 at 13:29 #298764All the criticism of ‘Aussie’ Jim McGrath makes me chuckle.
In my opinion, the guy is still the man for the big occasion – and they don’t come any bigger than today.
They certainly didn’t come much bigger than Sea The Stars attempt at Arc glory last year. He used all of his knowledge and experience to encapsulate the importance of the occasion and his excitement the moment Sea The Stars hit the front spoke for the vast majority of racing fans.
Perfection in equine form? Sea The Stars was.
A lesson in how to call a race of that magnitude. Most definitely.
I expect another vintage call at 16:00.
June 5, 2010 at 21:25 #298901Have to agree with that point, the calling of the Arc was perfect.
June 5, 2010 at 21:39 #298909Another fine call from him today, too.
We racing fans are truly spoilt by the technological advances in television.
High-Definition. Wonderful camera angles.
Loved the side-on shot of Workforce emerging from the pack to charge down At First Sight.
Great job by the BBC. No better sporting presenter around than Claire Balding.
Marvellous.
June 5, 2010 at 21:53 #298912I’ve never had any problems with the BBC’s coverage. I think they do a good job and Jim McGraph is still a great commentator. It’s not easy to do what he does and under so much pressure. Surely we can excuse some mistakes?

I wondered why she wasn’t on it at the last GP Jeremy. She still does the column on Motogp in the Telegraph though. Shame as she was very good. Mind you Jennie Gow was good and should be good at Mugello.
