Apologies in advance but I am not a lover of Geraghty and what he was doing today on Charli Parcs was odd to my eyes. He could not have found more trouble in running if he had tried and then when somehow the horse had pulled him out of the mire he fired him into the second last resulting in a fall.
I think it is Enda Bolger who has something in his office that says something along the lines of “horses don’t make mistakes jockeys do”
Well today not for the first time Geraghty got the horse in trouble and in my opinion caused the fall.
And before anyone asks I did not have a bet on the horse but was interested in how it performed with a view to Cheltenham after the bullish reports coming from Henderson saying how good the horse was and how well it jumped.February 25, 2017 at 21:35 #1288949JP McManus likes his horses held up for a late run.
This is/was the horse’s last run before running at Cheltenham in a large, more competitive field.
Am sure going round the inner – amongst horses in a comparitively small, uncopetitive field was supposed to help in preparing Charli for Cheltenham. They played the percentages but it did not pay off this time. Not that it had anything to do with today, but imo he’s better over fences – although still excellent over hurdles. I do believe (like AP) on average Barry is at his very best less often now he’s riding JP horses, purely because of how the owner likes his horses ridden.

I would agree that similarly to the McCoy association he hardly manages a mistake free round these days. Not too surprising though if you rarely see an obstacle as a chance to make ground.
As for Charli Parcs for whatever reasons he didn’t look the same horse who created such a good impression on debut.

Seems daft if that is the case. Surely it depends on the horse. And surely it’s better if the trainer makes these decisions?
February 26, 2017 at 00:51 #1288976Agree with the Judge,
Good job he flies home in a helicopter, otherwise I’d hate to be his driver on the motorway, stuck in the slow lane behind a 78 year old granny doing 50mph in a clapped out old mini, “we’ll take her 100 yards before our junction” “but’s that’s 200 miles away boss”….!!!Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
February 26, 2017 at 01:00 #1288977Surely the trouble found in running was largely due to the horse not travelling (which was a surprise as he travelled so well on his British debut)? As a consequence Geraghty could not acquire the position desired after the third last and, therefore, got stuck behind weakening outsiders around the home turn. Then the horse came back on the bridle somewhat, responding well, to dispute the lead at the penultimate flight but moving at a faster, less-controlled speed (having rushed to regain lost ground) than ideal and, on only his third hurdles run, meeting timber in a more hectic situation than at any obstacle previously jumped just got it wrong. Charlie Parcs was held up in his run for his French trainer and held up in the last pair on Dec 27 whereas in the Adonis he was held up nearer to the pace. The real talking point is why the horse didn’t travel on this occasion and pertinent to this may be that he missed his intended engagement at Musselburgh with, I think, a pulled muscle.
February 26, 2017 at 09:10 #1288984Was struggling for a fair bit before the fall and fell like a tired horse.
But I agree that it is surely the case that some of the McManus horses would be better suited by forcing tactics. That said, I wonder what the performance vs market expectation relationship is between horses who front run and those held up in rear. Anyone?
February 26, 2017 at 11:46 #1288997Going by Press Association race comments that appear on the Sporting Life website results service –
All UK 2016 to Yesterday
Led A/E = 1.28
Prominent A/E = 1.02
Mid div and further back A/E = 0.84February 26, 2017 at 14:28 #1289031CP never looked happy at any point. Might have panicked a bit in the scrum and tried to back off (as they spread out coming into the straight he seemed to take hold of the bridle again), or maybe just had a bad day.
As to JP’s horses, I’ve never paid that much attention to the running style. I believe he has more than 400 horses in training. Watching those distinctive colours, most of them, most of the time are going to be in the pack. It would be interesting to see some ‘proper’ data on his runners, perhaps by price.
February 26, 2017 at 18:01 #1289053Geraghty to miss Cheltenham with injuries sustained. This will cause mix and match with JP’s runners, with whatever top jockey not claimed elsewhere probably getting preference over Mark Walsh, but the replacements will not know the horses as well. First top horses and now the top jockeys going down like flies!
February 26, 2017 at 18:20 #12890566 broken ribs and a punctured lung…I’d still have been lying on the track.
February 26, 2017 at 20:16 #1289078I didn’t even know you had 6 ribs…………
February 26, 2017 at 20:19 #1289079Does this mean that the McManus horses won’t be stopped at the Festival?

Some of these are quite easy to predict.
Buveur D’Air – Coleman
Unowhatimeanharry – Fehily
Defi Du Seuil – JohnsonI would imagine that Walsh will get the chance on several of the others.

Ruby or Mark?

The others I mentioned had associations with the named horses. It would show a distinct lack of loyalty if they didn’t use Mark Walsh on plenty of the other horses. For instance he has already ridden Coney Island twice this season.
