“He was making a bit of noise” or “Found to be lame the next day” would be an excuse, but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen “He’s out for the season” used in that manner…
December 5, 2019 at 09:44 #1476572Why not praise the enterprising ride given to the winner than choosing to slag off ONE of the jockeys that missed the start??
If you are going to be critical at least be critical of ALL the jockeys that gave the winner a soft lead
December 5, 2019 at 11:05 #1476574Sorry Raymo, when you’re responsible for 13k to win 2k it is a bit different than when you’re riding a 16/1 shot.
And let’s not forget the ones he rode as instructed for the bloke with the green and golden sleeves.December 5, 2019 at 15:24 #1476590How is it different ruby, thats a really flawed perspective, jockeys want to win regardless if its 1/100 or 100/1? Not to mention your factoring in that jockeys should care about the odds a horse is before the off, when they shouldnt..
December 5, 2019 at 18:11 #1476604They all want to win, regardless of their odds. But when you carry the money of an entire nation, the pressure is a lot higher. You can’t take too many risks and are even more focussed than a jockey on a 50/1 shot whose race is likely to end a lot earlier.
All that I know is that people loved blaming Ruby for his falls on a hot favourite, but NEVER ANY OTHER jockeys from the same race.December 7, 2019 at 21:52 #1476832I must admit I am no fan of Geraghty and the ride he gave BVD was poor. Regardless of the injury BVD got it was a poor ride.
However what I cannot understand is how the racing press seem to blame Champ rather that Geraghty. The horse got him out of trouble but blaming poor Champ in my eyes was poor. It’s not that he’s never ridden there before.
Personally I don’t bet on horses that he rides I try and find an angle against him. It works more often that not.December 8, 2019 at 08:13 #1476846He gave defi a competent ride yesterday , he’s a good jockey but like many older jockeys in good jobs he,s not going to this a average horse at a fence …self preservation
January 1, 2020 at 15:27 #1478679Sizing John – his final ride of the year knuckled on landing and fell.
Champ – his first ride of the year fell when in command two out.
The bad run continues.
January 1, 2020 at 16:52 #1478696As I posted on another thread, the fact he was having a sneaky look around and ended up on the deck was not good.
Not convinced he was at his best on OK Corral either.
He is a real puzzle because I voted for his ride on Sire Du Berlais as the best of 2019 – but that might have been my wallet talking!
January 5, 2020 at 23:26 #1479047Not exactly sure this contributed to the fall all the same.
Horse has jumping frailties it’s that simple.
I don’t love BG at all btw.

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!January 6, 2020 at 08:18 #1479064No, I don’t think it did really. All I am saying is if I had lumped on at odds on (not something I do) I would prefer my jockey to be concentrating on what was ahead of him rather than looking around.

A very good jockey and a gent. Good luck to him with whatever he’s got planned for the future.
July 12, 2020 at 07:59 #1493689It feels a bit like Ruby Walsh’s retirement last year. Back after a serious injury, one more season where he was a bit selective about what and where he rode and then call it a day. It is not unexpected given his age and rotten luck with injuries.
But what a way to go out. Five winners at the Cheltenham Festival! I thought he was very good on Epatante and the Champ race will live long in the memory.
And to be associated with all time greats like Sprinter Sacre and Moscow Flyer is really something special.
Looking back at this thread, I still stand by what I said about the ride in the Fighting Fifth. Cheltenham aside, I am not convinced he was riding as well in his last few years as he was in his prime. Having said that, his ride on Sire Du Berlais in 2019 was superb.
My personal favourite memory of Geraghty is his ride on Kicking King in the 2005 Gold Cup. He was on the best horse but it was a beautiful ride. I am sure he would have won a second Gold Cup but for injury.
It will be interesting to see what he does in retirement. Best of luck to him.
July 12, 2020 at 10:04 #1493693Good luck to him with whatever he does next
July 12, 2020 at 11:35 #1493703He was one of my favourites, it’s the end of an era, with the likes of him and Ruby retiring.
I’m sure that there will be a bit of speculation around who replaces him as retained rider for JP McManus.
I can see a scenario where Mark Walsh and Aidan Coleman split the rides, before Jonjo O’Neil takes over all being well in a few years.
July 14, 2020 at 20:47 #1493874Jesus is jonjo making a riding comeback , lol seriously I could see junior getting it in a few years , I’ve said on here numerous times the jockey who should be getting the next big job is Sean Bowen …bit left field but could jp tempt Nico away from the Henderson yard ?
July 16, 2020 at 11:51 #1493982I loved Geraghty as a jockey.
Tactically versatile and horses rarely put down oh him
There was a period where he struggled to win the big races but I think this was partly due to JPs horses lacking talent, particularly the chasers. He’ll make an excellent TV analyst
