Wasn’t Noble Yeats much shorter on Betfair?

There have been a few voices grumbling about Christian Williams, highlighting the very modest form of some of his runners before showing huge improvement when winning big Saturday handicaps.

I’ve long disliked the methods employed by Curley, but admit to a degree of admiration for the planning that went into his multiple bet coups. I once tried the same thing myself, although it was never intended to be about the betting.

Study of the program book and knowledge of the horses in the stable, led me to a Saturday evening meeting at Wolverhampton, Feb 16th, 2002. I agreed the plan with trainer Pat Murphy and we spent the next two months preparing four horses to be 100% ready on that night. Colonel Mustard in the 1m 0-60 classified claimer, Democracy in the 9f seller, Jalb in the 2m handicap and Gandon in the concluding 1m 4f handicap.

The objective was to have a meeting which all the syndicate members could attend and have a few each way doubles and trebles if they wished. Pat and I thought Mustard and Jalb were good things, Democracy sure to be placed at least and Gandon was the weak link, but hopefully it wouldn’t matter by 9:30 pm.

By 6:15, we had over 30 people gathered in a hospitality unit overlooking the course, some of whom had already been to Warwick that afternoon. Food and drink was being taken, bets were being placed, and then at about 6:30, we noticed a slight mist coming in from the far side of the course. By 6:40 we could no longer see the furlong pole. By 6:50, the winning post was a vague shadow and the stewards and jockeys were inspecting.

Ten minutes after the scheduled off of the first race, the meeting was abandoned, and so far as I know, it’s the only time a Wolverhampton Saturday evening has ever been called off because of fog. Even the best laid plans can go wrong!

I was enjoying that, then the fog. Stout fellow for trying.
