Agree with you there Lingfield.
I do think David Pipe is much more forthcoming with the media. But i think it is David Johnson more than anything that stops them talking.
all i am saying is that 9times out of 10 you can be sure what is going to happen with a pipe/johnson runner just by watching the market.
When smaller trainers are noted to be like this then the HRA are on their back and watching every move, IMO the pipe team have been able to get away with quite a bit. There is no way Bannow Strand would have been allowed to go off at 6/1 unless people ‘in the know’ were laying it.
We all know how hard to win with it is, but with a forecast opening show of 5/4 (i think 6/4 was matched on betfair early doors) i certainly wouldnt have been preapred to lay it at 6’s unless i really knew something. That is just me, but i would think many people on here would be the same.
There are a few Pipe/Johnson drifters that win, but when i say a few i mean very few…….. maybe one or two a year, and maybe Lingfield is right, perhaps on those occassions the ‘camp’ honestly thought the horse had no chance.
I remember when Acambo made his debut. Roddi Greene up and Pipe had the FAV in the race (an ex flat horse from Elsworth’s i think) Acambo drifted like a barge and the FAV was well fancied. The shock on connections faces when Acambo won……. money lost or just surprised??

January 19, 2007 at 11:34 #36103Plenty of the horses from these connections are put in far too short. The ones that drift, usually do so because they aren’t much good.

Agreed, but this is only some of the time.
As ive said before, for this one horse (Bannow Strand) the market speaks volumes for. It did run in the challow first time out right? or second time out?
anyway, no wonder it didnt really figure, so when it turns up in a crap novice hurlde at Fontwell or Folkestone, cant remember which it was put in about a 4/7 shot in the paper……. anyway, that was a bit short, but i think it OPENED about 4/5 and drifted all day out to around 6/4 and returned 5/4, Timmy made no effort that day.
Now the only two times this horse has won at has been well backed throughout the day and on both occassions has won easily. No matter if it is put in far too short, they back it whatever the price!
I just think they get away with a lot more than most people in this game.

January 19, 2007 at 13:00 #36105They get away with it more than some? Really I can think of 3 non-tryers off the top of my head that were owned by David Johnson in the last couple of years, namely Oasis Banus, Celtic Son and Go Commercial (last-named trained by Monteith).
January 19, 2007 at 14:14 #36106Let alone the ignominy of Magnus (340k well spent  ) falling foul of the Stewards at the Cheltenham Festival!!
