Since many of the Ballydoyle tyos are carrying three lbs overweight when they run how can we judge the merit of their performance? At Leopardstown on Thursday Tenth Star second fav.(Ballydoyle) carrying 3lbs overweight(ridden by Joseph O’Brien) was beaten a neck by the fav.Zip Top(Jim Bolger). Jim said after the race that his horse was very useful. What does he know, he beat a horse carrying 3lbs overweight?
What are the rules about this sort of thing?Who enforces the rules? I read about a month ago that Joseph was prohibited from riding carrying overweight. However he seems to be doing it again.

The Derby result indicates that Joseph O’Brien carried nine stone in the Derby so how come he was three pounds overweight at Leopardstown? Seems like it is a case of the public be damned.

Andy, I think all this means is that Joseph’s 3lbs. claim has been forfeited and that his mount carried the same weight as the winner.

But the horse still carried 3lb more than it should have

Any jockey in Ireland putting up more than 3lb overweight can only ride at the discretion of the stewards, hence the reason he was stopped from riding Apache on the 27th March 2011.

Thank you all for the explanation.Hard to tell what exactly they mean by the + 3lbs. Do they mean he carries 3lbs more than he would have carries if he had been able to claim the three lbs which he is entitled to claim but could not claim?

Here is how it is reported.
    1 drawn1 Zip Top (IRE)9-0 K J Manning J S Bolger age2
    5/4 f
Made all, pushed along from early straight, ridden out and kept on well final furlong opened 11/8 touched 6/4

    2 drawn3 nk Tenth Star (IRE) 9-0 (+3) J P O’Brien (3) A P O’Brien age2,11/8
tracked leaders on inner in 3rd, switched right to go 2nd early final furlong, kept on well without reaching winner opened 11/8 touched 11/8.

Thanks Ruby. That was what I thought it meant. So why not use a professional jockey (since the apprentice was beaten a head)? Is this what Aidan means by using the best jockey available?Surely Ballydoyle cannot afford to lose races using an apprentice without a claim? Is this good practice for a world wide professional operation such as Ballydoyle? I,for one,do not think so.

I don’t know about overweight jockeys but one thing is for sure, they can’t buy a winner domestically at present.

Another odds on shot has just bitten the dust.
