I’m not sure what to think of Frodon being back out this year, but certainly can’t swerve him in this, and he’s a straightforward selection for me with this race in the bag for him last year. Almost certainly signs of (slight) regression last year, but off the same mark here, I’ll be betting early. Stablemate Complete Unknown would worry me.

Sam Brown is a horse I’ll definitely be betting again this year, but I’ve got him in mind for The Sodexo Silver Cup at Ascot ideally, while he would fit the profile I look for in The Becher. I’m hoping he’ll need this, as there’s another I want to bet here, along with Frodon.

Courtland really caught my eye in The Old Roan, and he was always going to be of interest next time he stepped up.

Frodon and Courtland for me, and I’ll both early, but Sam Brown definitely complicating matters

Double Edit. Definitely got Courtland mixed up with something else. Frodon is as short as 4’s, and having decided against it, will he be shorter than 4’s. Very debatable

    Frodon 4’s

Dusart has been a very frustrating horse to follow, but I’ve bet him one more time here at 10-1

    Il definitely be backing Frodon

    Great record fresh
    Down to a nice mark
    Romped in last year
This will be his main race of the year so Nicholls will have him primed

He’s a legend of a horse that owes me absolutely nothing

Be great to see another vintage performance from the old boy

Disappointed by the small turnout for this, with it likely to cut up. But that be the times.

I quite like the look of Blackjack Magic. Conditions should suit, and I think there’s a little wiggle room in his current mark. Only thing putting me off him at this moment is his other entries this week.

Threeunderthrufive had a bit of a frustrating time of it last year, but got things together with a good run in the Scottish National. I think he’s quite a bit better than his current mark, and this looks an attainable prize.

Kris, Dusart entered in Hennessy as well….you think he might run in both?

According to the RP, of the 16 currently declared only 5 actually have jockeys jocked up (Nico is down for Dusart, so assume he will run, maybe as a prep for the Coral Gold Cup) and oddly Anthony Honeyball has 4 entries (non have jockeys currently) and Neil Mulholland has 3 entries (none of which have jockeys either).

Hard to say how many of those without jockeys currently will turn up but most will need to run in order to even have a double digit field for the race.

Did also note a lot of collective letters in the form of those currently declared.

I’m hoping ballygriffin cottage can get his career back on track in this. He started really promisingly over fences but it’s gone badly since then. Reappearance was poor but this lad ran so well in the Albert Bartlett a few yra back. More hope than anything else tho. Currently 14s

Two years ago, Threeunderthrufive won the 3M novice chase at Exeter on the Haldon Gold Cup card, with the formbook comment “made all, jumped well”. He was also 3/3 over hurdles on right handed tracks the previous season, including a 3M Listed race at Perth.

Since then he’s run ten consecutive chases on left handed tracks. And although he won the first three in small fields and novice company, in handicaps, he’s had comments like “jumped right on occasions”, “blundered and UR 1st”, “didn’t jump with fluency”.

In the Badger Beer, he finally gets to run a handicap going right-handed in a race that will also provide a sufficient stamina test. And he also gets Cobden replacing Heskin, and a stable companion that will ensure a strong pace. I’ll cheer with everybody else if Frodon can win this again, but I’ll be richer if Threeunderthrufive proves too good getting 11lbs from the old boy.

Sam Brown for me here. This is a level below most of his races in the last two years. A bit of soft ground wouldn’t mind him either.

    Sam Brown 7/1

I’m tempted by Forward Plan but he is out of the weights. The Tizzard stable is in good form so hoping The Big Breakaway can put up a win, he has the class.

The more I know the less I understand.

The big breakaway deserves a good hcap , I’ve played him but this might just be to sharp , I’ve played Ballygriffin cottage also , he’s went of the rails but I can’t forget that novice form , more aids today and I’m hoping he’ll come on for that first run

Winner very game , I wonder if they’ll be tempted to go into the veteran races with Frodon , imagine him winning the final at Sandown ….

At his age Frodon is probably on the downgrade now.
By the time the Final comes up he’ll probably be a long way below his best.
If I was Nicholls I’d find some small field conditions chases.

It is still a handicap HDLG.
You’re right, Frodon would be the “classiest horse in the race by a fair margin” but that’s why he’ll be giving away a hell of a lot of weight to his rivals.
…And due to being on the downgrade probably won’t be up to running to his handicap mark either.
    Double trouble.

imo Better to run in conditions chases at level weights against (if well placed) still inferior horses.
