Roberto Mancini (Inter) leaving that job so presumably Jose is to be the next one there.
So at Chelsea Mancini, Rijkaard, Scolari, Hughes and Deschamps are in the frame.
Any others?
One rising star I think will get a big job soon is Michael Laudrup. did a superb job with a small squad at Getafe losing only 6 of 30 games.
May 28, 2008 at 12:32 #165705Grant was a bizarre appointment in many ways …
I don’t think it was bizarre – I think he was always only keeping the seat warm for the remainder of the season – until EURO 2008 is over and Hiddink becomes available.
May 29, 2008 at 08:10 #165780Surprised Avram didn’t take the "upstairs" role he was offered. It seem ed likely all along that his stay as Team Manager would be brief but I didn’t expect him to go altogether

Can’t see him at City.
Shinawatra will be looking for somebody with a proven pedigree, who is as ruthless as he and his "advisors" are. Sven was too much of a gentleman for them.May 29, 2008 at 17:10 #165851The soap opera continues.
Now Henk ten’cate has been given his marching orders only a couple of days after being given assurances that his position was safe.
I can only assume that either there was a behind the scenes power struggle or maybe that Chelsea are clearing the decks for the new guy to bring in his own staff. As Rijkaard and ten’cate were close this would probably rule him out of the job.
May 29, 2008 at 21:10 #165890I thought the opposite was the case – with Ten Cate gone Rijkaard may consider Chelsea.
June 1, 2008 at 10:11 #166139Latest reports have either Mark Hughes or Ancelotti getting the job. Another source says Rijkaard.
Hopefully whoever doesn’t get the job will land at Man City. Houllier is the other persistent rumour for that one.

I’m wondering how you feel about the appointment of Scolari to succeed Grant?
The Sunday Times today has a piece with the seemingly accurate title "I went for the money", which of course he’ll get either way. If he succeeds and stays, his annual income; if he fails a large payoff. (The article suggests he has a much different idea of what constitutes enough money than most people.)
As I see it, Chelsea have essentially swapped a young and hungry manager (Jose) with a need to continue building a reputation with someone whose reputation is established beyond tarnishing in his home country, and who is most unlikely to have the same hunger and desire for success at Chelsea as Jose had. In essence, they have taken on a guy looking for a well paid "retirement" job.
It may of course prove that Scolari’s personal pride and undoubted talent as a manager, coupled with Abramovitch’s seemingly endlessly deep pockets, will bring success. And that would be even more likely if United lose Ronaldo. But my hunch is still that Chelsea are in for another potless season.
June 15, 2008 at 11:46 #168420I though Grant descending the stairs on Wednesday were some of the most moving scenes I have seen in football. His consoling of his captain was also extremely commendable.
Absolutely – a decent, dignified manager to the last.

A decent and dignified manager he may have been, but boring as hell, dull, tactically naive, and unliked by many fans was the reality. A few months back I said he would go even if he won the Champions League – like someone has already said, the only surprise is that people are surprised – it was inevitable that he would go.
But like Clivex has also pointed out, we don’t really know what went on behind the scenes. We don’t know what the agreement was when he took over. Remember, when Grant was appointed every man and his dog said it was just a stop gap – so why would getting to a Champions League final and finishing runner-up in the Premiership change that? An average manager could have achieved just the same with the Chelsea squad that Grant had in my opinion.
I’m not saying I agree with it all, I’m not saying that I like or dislike Grant, I’m just saying it was inevitable that Grant would be gone come the end of the season.
Sorry for the late reply to this thread, I’ve just noticed it as it was brought back to the top by a recent post.

June 15, 2008 at 14:07 #168432Would it be fair to say that he lacked personality. He looked quite a morose character.
On the positive side, taking Chelsea to the final of the Champions League, only to be beaten on penalties, and within a whisker of winning the Premiership, isn’t exactly what most of us mere mortals would construe as failure.
But then, Mr. Abramovich is no mere mortal – or so we are led to believe.

June 16, 2008 at 09:54 #168512If my manager had succeeded where ALL others had failed (ie. getting to a Champions League Final in only his 8th month in charge) I would not be sacking him
Really? Even if the players had no real respect for him?
Mikkymo gets it about right
I suppose to some, Tony Barton was a finer manager than Ron Saunders at Villa
An incredibly naive assesment….
As for Scolari…well pleased. Obviously well aware of his abilities and achievements but having boned up some more, its clear that he has great man management abilities and is strongly respected by nearly all the players hes worked with. Its a cracking appointment

Another clear out at Chelsea as the Russian prat demonstrates his incompetence. Another potless season still looks a good bet to me. I’m not even certain Chelsea will finish in the top four.
February 9, 2009 at 22:11 #209281Mourihno to return ?
I think it’s fair to say that Big Phil had lost the Chelsea dressing room – news speak for – the players weren’t trying for him.

February 10, 2009 at 01:30 #209344Lump on Sven. 16/1 apparently but only 10’s with the golden sign. Things not great with Mexico.

Cheers Ken…will do…I think he will do well at Fratton Park
February 10, 2009 at 01:44 #209349Good thinking Pomp. I’ve backed him big time to take on both jobs at the same time. My hero Sven, best Manager in the World Cup, quarter final stages.
CheersFebruary 10, 2009 at 18:59 #209467Chelsea been granted permission to speak to Guus Hiddink.
February 11, 2009 at 05:41 #209603all of their managers have anagrams instead of names…..
