Chezza’s getting his free coffee back in the riff-raff free haven that is his local Waitrose: https://www.theguardian.com/business/2022/oct/16/waitrose-to-bring-back-free-hot-drinks-for-loyalty-card-members

Excellent news. Caffè Nero no less, probably the best of the large chains. What a time to be alive.

Your hard work during the trial clearly paid off Ian!

I must have told every member of staff during the trial how great it was to have it back at least twice, Richard!

I’ve actually never owned a warranty card/club card or anything like that, I’m kind of a miserable b*astard and refuse to let these big corporations rope me in with loyalty cards, instead I intelligently choose to pay higher prices for no logical reason.

I have been tempted to get a club card in order to use Tescos petrol stations though and save a little bit of money on fuel that way.

I have both Waitrose and Tesco cards on my phone, but only use the latter for fuel and tbh not often recently as their frequently higher pump prices wipe out any benefit from Clubcard points.

The savings on both are negligible but fun – I enjoy saving a quid here or there, it feels like a win, a bit like winning four pence off a free spin from an online bookie.

“Waitrose?! My oh my, how the Labour voter persona has changed.”

Waitrose’s customers tend to favour the Guardian rather than the Telegraph. ;-)

I feel I ought to point out I don’t read any newspaper.

And my online news sources are, and as I see them:

BBC for dull, safe, but mostly reliable news

SKY for edgier, looking for drama, but also I feel fairly reliable news, or at least gossip

The Guardian for the biased centre left take

The Daily Mail for the biased centre right take

    And all FREE to read!

Despite the reputation, I don’t think Waitrose is necessarily much more expensive than Sainsburys or Tesco if you are selective.

If you want to waste your money then blind loyalty to any of them is the best way. I will variously be found in Sainsburys, Tesco, Aldi, Lidl and Waitrose as they are all near me.

    Couldn’t agree more.

Utter myth that Waitrose is really expensive – they have a very cheap “essential” range for a start.

Wouldn’t dream of food shopping anywhere else tbh – though I do like Lidl for their continental stuff you just can’t buy anywhere.

Panettone at Christmas for example – you can get an authentic one at Lidl for literally a quarter of the price you’ll pay for an inferior British take on one at Waitrose or Tesco.

Shop around for the best price as Richard says – treat it like a betting ring!

There is no Waitrose near me, so I am only a very occasional visitor.

M&S and Lidl are my main destinations. Lidl is far better than Aldi.

Asda is quite good and there is a mini-Tesco near by which is convenient (although it has been closed for refurbishment for over a month – how long does it take to spruce up a small shop?)

    I try to avoid Sainsbury’s.

Good analogy! It’s not even that hard to shop around, you can look it all up online. Anything that keeps just buy in bulk at whatever supermarket has it on offer, and yes that includes Waitrose. Some products are always on offer somewhere, they just rotate it around the supermarkets.

“Lidl is far better than Aldi.”

I agree with this – I’d expected Aldi to be just like it, but it isn’t.

HDLG “I just drink tap water ….or council juice as its refered to up here”

Absolutely HDLG, we’re lucky up in Scotland with softer water, no furring
up of the heating elements in the kettle or having to use filters. My daughter
in Law from London commented right away *your water tastes so good. Ours
comes from Loch Eck. No need to pay a quid, or whatever for bottled water :good:

The water quality in London is shocking. A taste of it is enough to make me feel sick.
