    From my preview (DLAP):

    ‘5:00 – Ascot Stakes (Handicap)
Willie Mullins tends to hold a strong hand in this annually with three winners in the last six runnings of this race. He runs five this year with the unknown quantity of Chelkar getting the vote of confidence from Ryan Moore. That choice of ride from Moore is eye-opening as he clearly believes the unexposed five year old to be Mullins’ best chance. This is a major step up in trip though and it’s hard to back him with any confidence. Of Mullins’ other raiders, Stratum is consistent but has stamina to prove whilst Whiskey Sour is a classy horse but would’ve wanted some cut in the ground. With the ground against him, I will have to look elsewhere from the top weight here. Marie Devie is talented and relishes big field handicaps over hurdles which should bode well. He may have wanted some rain ideally but is capable on this ground too. Lagostovegas was third in the Cesarewitch at Newmarket in this spear and is another of Mullins’ battalion that can’t be ruled out. White Desert is another unknown quantity in the race with the step up in trip and class uncertain to suit. Look My Way held on at Chester from the rapidly closing COEUR DE LION (8/1). The latter sneaks in at the bottom of the weights here, goes well on good ground and the extra two furlongs will suit him down to the ground. Dannyday is a danger with the former Northumberland Plate winner set to be sharper after his solid reappearance last time at Goodwood.’

I had to go for Chelkar purely because he used to be with Jean-Claude Rouget.

He won his first two races and tread the hallowed turf of Chantilly and Deauville, compared to the jumps tracks many here have come from. He has to stay of course, but gelded and in the hands of a genius he could be well in here.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I’m pretty sure Mr Mullins is going to take this race out but I couldn’t quite figure out with who, so I’ve backed 3 of them. Chelkar has Ryan Moore up and looks very unexposed. Whiskey Sour’s running style over hurdles suggests to me should enjoy this if he handles the livelier surface with Soumillion on board. Finally, Meri Devie goes into this race in form after winning over hurdles last time out and looks competitively handicapped returning to the flat.

    Chelkar 7/1
    Meri Devie 10/1
    Whiskey Sour 11/1

MOM, excuse my ignorance but what is DLAP?

I am on Meri Devie, i have long thought she would improve for a step up in trip over hurdles….have followed her for sometime and i think we can be confident she will stay here today as well.

Coeur De Lion the other i will back as well.

I have backed two of Willie Mullins.

LAGOSTOVEGAS looks the main one for me. Placed in the County Hurdle and the Ces!! And first time hood!! 11/1 looks plenty big enough!!

WHISKEY SOUR was also placed at Cheltenham and should be held up nicely off hopefully a good pace 12/1

    Both five places e/w

Dannyday 10/1 e/w. Progressive before getting injured and can resume his progress now if he doesn’t bounce.

Seems like a few of us have the same idea, and that Willie Mullins maybe holds
the answer (as he has done often in this race). I’m with Raymo and have gone for
Lagostovegas at 10s. I liked his run over 2f less in the Cesarewitch
where he was running on well for 3rd. I like the jockey booking, I think Atzeni reads
his races well and more often than not gets the best out of his mount. Perhaps the
hood may eke out a little more, but I think he has a good shout regardless.

    Well played Raymo and BigG.

BigG you very nearly convinced me to back him just before the race but I stuck to me guns. I was very tempted but not to be.

    Cracking winner though lads

Cheers MOM, I think Atzeni rode a great race, tucked him in on the rail just off the
leaders and brought him out just at the right time. I’m well pleased. I’m sure You will
be on the cream cakes again tonight Raymo :good:
