1. Where did I put Asadna’s poor display “all down to the trainer’s fault”?
I said:
“And something looks amiss with him at present too” (something physically wrong with the horse).
And
“A run (at Royal Ascot) where the horse received a cut the Friday before”.
And
“Boughey was generally in poor form (at the time of Royal Ascot)”The change to a not so good stable is just another factor.
2. Why is it a “slur” on the trainer? I like Haynes as a trainer. I just don’t think she’s anywhere near as good as Boughey who I rate extremely highly.
Value Is EverythingAugust 29, 2023 at 21:15 #1661507Asadna being a small horse with little physical scope for improvement may also be a factor.
…But when a small horse probably picks up an injury between the first and second run… and / or is affected by the trainer being in poor form at the time of the second run… And then is transferred to an inferior stable after the second run…
My point is that I don’t think it is at all surprising Asadna has failed to run to the form he appeared to show on debut considering what’s gone on since.
Some such horses end up running their best race on debut.
Value Is EverythingAugust 29, 2023 at 21:21 #1661511Trainers can only be judged on their results relative to their resources.
When I look at the respective “winners above or below expected” records of Boughey and Haynes I don’t see a whole lot of difference between the pair tbh.

Value Is EverythingAugust 29, 2023 at 22:48 #1661514I’m expecting Boughey to be one of Britain’s top 7 trainers.
You say about “winners above or below expected”.
It’s not all about one horse, but Boughey’s 1000 Guineas winner (who also only failed in a photo finish to win the French equivalent too) Cachet was by Acclaim.Has any trainer (even the very best) got as much out of any horse by Acclaim?
That imo is an outstanding performance by the trainer from small resources. Especially considering the dam Poyle Sophie was only a maiden.Early days yet – with both trainers – but can’t think of anything Haynes has done that comes close to that.
Look at the improvement Boughey has got out of Via Sistina after taking over her training too. Another Group 1 winner for the yard.

August 30, 2023 at 08:46 #1661533“It’s not all about one horse” – correct, it’s not even all about two horses either.
When Haynes is sent horses of the calibre of Cachet and Via Sistina I will start expecting her to train Group 1 winners.
Until then, I will judge her on the actual horses she is sent to train.

No, not the best maiden win ever.
Just a very good rating performance for a debut.
Just a debut, nothing else, no world beater after just one run.I have seen plenty of horses who’ve declined at least as massive, thanks.
Believe it or not it’s what often happens when a horse is injured and / or changes stable.Value Is EverythingAugust 30, 2023 at 13:59 #1661549“Until then, I will judge her on the actual horses she is sent to train”.

September 10, 2023 at 12:52 #1662506If Asadna had had an accident after an impressive debut…
And been running on three legs ever since…
You’d still be trying to tell us it proves how right you were about that crap debut, Nathan.
