Jane Mangan hosted “Luck On Sunday” on RTV this morning. She spoke to Arthur Moore about his life in racing.
He spoke about L’Escargot, trained by his father. I never knew that when the horse won his bumper he was ridden by Ben Hanbury!
The footage of L’Escargot’s Gold Cup win was shown. The ground looked parched. Some of it looked more brown than green. Obviously no worries about watering and ensuring good to soft ground in those days!

The author of a recent book on him tweeted to me that if any forum members buy a copy he’ll send a signed copy.
March 26, 2023 at 17:18 #1641583Cracking horse, CAS, and runner up to Red Rum in the first race I ever remember watching on TV, the 1974 Grand National.
If Red Rum had never been around I think L’Escargot’s Grand National form figures would have been “211” and IIRC, when Red Rum was made 7/2 favourite for the 1975 Grand National, L’Escargot himself was only 13/2, such was the pair’s popularity and dominance of the race at that time.

March 28, 2023 at 19:22 #1641770Have just watched this and it reminds that I once came across an original canvas painting for sale in some quaint York city centre shop depicting the Gold Cup where he beat Leap Frog. Was very pricey too if memory serves.
Another Moore animal worth mentioning is Feroda who won the 2m novice chase at Aintree on the Friday, then reappeared to win the opening Captain Morgan the following day.
March 29, 2023 at 20:30 #1641827Arthur Moore is married to a sister of Timmy Jones, Mr T A Jones who rode Gay Future at Cartmel.
Tommy Carberry was married to Arthur’s sister Pamela so he was uncle to Paul and Nina Carberry
I remember Arthur riding before taking ove the licence from his father
