Pat Taaffe is adamant Arkle would have won the Grand National too if he went for it…his owner didn’t want to risk him because of the mayhem of fallers and loose horses, and ,it was ironic she made that comment in 1966 because we all know what happened there in 1967 !
Ironically the fortuitous winner of the 1967 contest was sold out of Tom Dreapers yard two years earlier having carried the colours of the Duchess of Westminster. Foinavon was named after a mountain in the Scottish highlands as were Arkle and Champion two mile chaser Ben Stack – the three rise above the Sutherland Estate owned by the Duchess.
Pat Taaffe is also reputed to have told the Duchess at one stage
to the 1965 Doncaster Sales that Foinavon would win a Grand National.
