Well everything was going very smoothly at Exeter there, until Disaster!
Celestial Halo
made an absolute horlicks of the 3rd last! I was very happy with his jumping up to that point,in fact he was jumping a lot cleaner than i anticipated, what doesn"t help is, if he cant jump at half speed, whats he going to jump like at an Arkle pace round Cheltenham! Not a good start!
October 19, 2010 at 14:40 #323288Agree with you there that he was jumping well if a little safe at some, The fence he actually fell at seemed to step at it and looked to be on a good stride to so no fault of Rubys.
He used to step at the odd hurdle if i remember right done it in the 2009 champion hurlde at the last and on a few in the bula last year, might be a problems of his, overall would be happy with the performance but wudnt be backing him yet as there might be a doubt that he stays over fences from what Nicholls said on ATR.
If he runs again over fences would be a watching race for me to see if his still confident and can jump fences without stepping at them to much.

Really? I would give him another chance over fences before i make such a big bold statement like that!

October 19, 2010 at 18:09 #323329To me, it looked like he took of a fair way from the fence and actually landed almost on top of the fence, i.e. in a similar, just less ‘forceful’ manner that Denman did when he fell at Newbury last season.
I personally thought, up until that point, his jumping was ok, not a problem, was clearing the fences with ease, and was giving them plenty of daylight, but was also being quick and economical.
That said, i personally think he will get done for toe at Cheltenham in an Arkle and i imagine the Ryanair distance would be more suitable for the horse.

Ditto but the Arkle could still be the easier race and toe has never realy been a problem Ruby reckons he’s deceivingly faster than he looks.
The Arkle is a walking disaster this year and the season isn’t even off the ground yet.
I’d give CH another chance but PN isn’t keen. Jonjo has given up on the idea and they are both in the first 4 in the betting still.
Medermit only won last yaer because Punjabi wasn’t right and Punjabi would eat him for breakfast over fences and should be about fav if scholing reports are anything to go by.
Mikael D’Haguenet is probably the best bet in the race at the moment at 37 on the machine and easy to back at 25/1 and he’s unlikely to run in the race.
Minute he shows face if it’s in a race less than 2m4f the rumours will start and he’ be 4/1 or 5/1 favourite for the race.
I’d back to lay him or CH just before the race if he looks like running over fences again,
You can bet your boots if he ask Ruby he’ll tell him he’ll be fine because he jumped really well today but PN was being very negative talking about how he’s not bred for chasing and how they can always go back to hurdling.
Kauto Star fell on his backside when he run at that tricky little course……I though CH was very clever at one of his fences sttod back really well at a couple and never made the slightest error until deciding that walking through one might be a quicker way to get to the other side than jumping over it.
Those errors happen a lot with ex hurdlers because when they are asked to go about their business and things speed up their heads go into hurdling mode because at racing pace that’s all they know.
I think that’s why they are called novices
Pn’s surely got to give the horse another chance with the Arkle looking so weak.

Big and Bold of you Underscore! Perhaps just another sentance to support your opinion, or is that it?
October 19, 2010 at 20:27 #323359Fist, don’t be so quick to put a line through Medermit for the Arkle.
He will be going to Aintree this weekend, as long as the ground is on the soft side.

He never really convinced me he was going to reach the top over hurdles Gaz. I wouldn’t be rushing out to back him but I did have another look at him.
He does have a big plus going for him.
Horses that continoulsy run well in goood hurdle races but lack that little bit extra it takes to win them very often make top class chasers.
I’ll have alook at him on Saturday and most likley bet him if he backable. Very consistant, sure to win races but whether he can go to te top or not is tee $1M question.
As predicted almost word for word Ruby has convinced PN to run CH again over fences which is good news. The race doesn’t have a great look about it so it needs all the ammo it can get.
I’m firmly in the Punjabi camp now, mainly due to the fact he’s trained by Nicky Henderson and he’s already shown he’s very versatile.
October 20, 2010 at 13:23 #323467Arvika Ligeonniere is my choice. Halo wont even make it to the Arkle, never mind win it. According to PFN he’ll be heading to the Aintree Hurdle…

Definitely a lot of positive vibes coming out of Nicky Henderson’s yard regarding how well Punjabi has taken to fences.
Will be slightly ‘weird’ in my view to see him going chasing, not sure why, but he’s one that i’d always associate with hurdling.
October 20, 2010 at 15:16 #323486It has to be Medermit for me. it was reported last season that he was seriously exciting when schooled over fences and was earmarked for this race last season. Alan King has run this race before and the horse has course form from what now looks quite a strong Supreme Novices 2 years ago
October 25, 2010 at 17:16 #324512Can anyone tell me why Punjabi is 25/1 for the Arkle and Medermit is 10s. Genuine question.
November 9, 2010 at 21:38 #327197Royal Charm, excellent performance today at Exeter, looks like one to keep on the right side of.
Medermit running tomorrow at Huntingdon too.
November 10, 2010 at 13:56 #327317Is Loosen My Load still value at 16-1 do we think?
November 10, 2010 at 17:51 #327358Not a good run from Medermit today, very disappointing at Huntingdon today.
I was very shocked to see the horse do that, especially with his jumping looking much better than it did at Aintree, before he refused.
Lots more schooling at home for him now, and i am sure he will put in a better performance next time.
He will drift in the betting for The Arkle, and rightly so.
I remember Tatenen being The Arkle market leader the other year after beating Straw Bear round Cheltenham, the same Straw Bear who never took to fencing.
Medermit’s price in the AP betting for The Arkle is a false price, and is far too short, similarly to Tatenen a couple of years ago. The former Nicholls horse should never have been that short in the market, and despite my allegiance to Mr King’s yard, Medermit represents a very short, and false price in my opinion.
